Hello everyone,

My sister received an admit for pursuing Master's in Electrical Engineering from Cal Poly SLO and NYU. I have tried searching about the reviews regarding the graduate program in Cal Poly SLO but i end up getting reviews for under graduate programs (which are positive).

So i would like to know how is the graduate program for engineering in Cal Poly SLO as compared to NYU poly ? How feasible is it to live off-campus in respective places ? And how is it for international students (we are non US residents) ? She is leaning towards Cal Poly because of the location, but i don't want her to miss out on a better engineering college just because of that.

Any help and information provided regarding graduate programs for these colleges is appreciated.

Thanks a lot, have a nice day.

Neither of them are on this list (go to the table and click ‘s rank high’ which gives the scholar’s rank of the program <a href=“NRC Rankings Overview: Electrical and Computer Engineering”>http://chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124726/ However, that is using ‘NYU’ but I don’t know of any ‘NYU Poly’ so if it is a different NY school, there are a few on the list, and Cal Poly isn’t. Neither are in the top 10 of this either http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-engineering-schools/electrical-engineering-rankings and I’m not going to pay for the rest of the list but you can if you like. I personally think the first list is more scholarly. The second ranks all sorts of things that are irrelevant to me, but you can click to look up their methodology and see if it makes more sense to you.

If neither is on either of these lists, personally, I’d rather go to school at Cal Poly, but I’m a UCSB alumnus and I love the area. In this country, more people who are NOT in engineering will know NYU than Cal Poly SLO, however, by a wide margin. Most would just generally consider NYU the better school, based on general reputation. You can live off campus at either, but while San Luis Obispo isn’t cheap, New York is downright expensive.

@collegevetting : By ‘NYU poly’ i meant ‘NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering’ http://engineering.nyu.edu/. Anyway neither of them are on the list. And you are right about NYU’s reputation. Thanks for the link provided and the info about living off-campus. Greatly appreciated. I will continue waiting for some more replies.

Cal poly, as you know is full fee.

Polytechnic Institute of NYU was formerly Polytechnic University, which was Polytechnic Institute of NY.

NYU is not known to be better school than Cal Poly SLO, not for engineering. Even then in my daughter’s high school naviance, the stats for kids that were admitted to NYU were much lower than Cal Poly SLO. Last year one of the top 1% from our school was rejected from SLO. She thought she had the stats for Harvard and Stanford too.

NYU, in general, is a “better” school than CalPoly-better in terms of caliber and diversity of students and, academics and graduate success. Does your sister want to live in farm-land Cental California (a 6 hour bus ride from a international airport) or urban Brooklyn? NYU is internationally recognizable, while Cal Poly is a big deal among middle class white people in California. Your sister should look at how long it takes the average student to complete a master’s degree at both schools and the completion rate.
