Cal Poly SLO VS University of Utah (Honors)

The choice we have to make is based upon a BioMedical Engineering major

Under these circumstances, both have prominent engineering programs - Which school provides a better launching pad to grad school?

University of Utah (Honors College) will provide special honors housing, honors course offerings as well as some yet to be know scholarship opportunities. It also provide 'think tank' research opportunities and the opportunity to write an honors thesis. Most importantly, it offers much closer access to mentors, advisors and like-kind academically focused students in a setting where NO class will be larger than 40 students. This is a semester system school that is attached to a medical center.

Cal Poly SLO offers 'learn by doing' and also has smaller class sizes, a strong engineering focus and a wonderful location in CSU's quarter system..

Our son intends to move on to grad school because he plans to get involved in NeuroProsthetics (his intended life-path since 7th grade) - a field yet to evolve into a true 'career' but will likely have a load of academic research opportunities and funding as it grows, thus he will likely go beyond even a masters degree someday.

Both schools are approx the same budget on the surface yet neither has sent the Fin Aid package yet. Transportation is Much better to/from Salt Lake City, UT than it is from San Luis Obispo, CA since we are in the Seattle, WA area...

Side note: UC Santa Cruz has also accepted him into their school of engineering but at this point it feels like the third place runner...any opinions?

I re-read the post…it would seem we are ‘leaning’ to U of U (Honors) - the truth is we definitely are pretty much even/steven now. this site seems to be very familiar with Cal Poly SLO so I offered more back ground.

we would really like to hear opinions as to what the Honors College ads in terms of a foundation for moving up in 4 years…we feel we have a pretty good handle on what a degree from Cal Poly provides in that arena…

Please Help - thanks :)
