Cal Poly administration announced this past Thursday that total Cal Poly student enrollment will be limited to 16000, from previous year of 18,360, a 12% decrease.

Cal Poly’s student population has not been nearly this small since 1998, at that time it was 16,298.

where did you hear the news?

The news came from Mustang Daily. It also include a 12% tuition hike.

Great article and I really appreciate that you posted it. As a parent who has pledged to pay for school this is a big deal. Dropping enrollment to 16,000 is also a big deal and all I can say is that I am humbled that my son got in under the new and reduced student body. My kid wanted a smaller school, but not at the expense of others.

I wonder why they’re having to convert traditional double dorm rooms into more triples this year then. Hmmmmm…I guess more of those 16,000 are just choosing to live on campus.

It could that the University wants to shut down some of the old dorms. The campus plan up until this year was geared for a 20,000 student enrollment. The cut back to 16k will no doubt force the shutdown of some excess facilities.

So perhaps they want to move all the freshmen into just 3 dorms (Sierra Madre, Yosmite, and the Red bricks), and forego the old North Mountain Halls.

No, that isn’t it at all. I read further where there just more freshman enrolled who will live on campus this coming year, so they want to make the space available for them.

hmmm…if that is the case there is probably only 1 other logical explanation for the triple bunking. The administration is preparing for an large influx of out of state and international students.

Since most OSS freshmen are new to SLO/CA, their first 2 years will pretty much be spent at the dorm housing instead of off-campus.

^^
Only freshman live in the dorms (with the exception of RAs). Or they can live in Cerro Vista apts. Sophomores and upper classmen can opt to live at Poly Canyon Village, which are also apts.
