Cal Poly Undergrad Business program

What is the reputation of Cal Poly SLO’s undergraduate business program at Orfalea? Is it top-notch in the state of California? How does it rank? How does it compare to other business schools as far as undergraduate studies are concerned? Which schools are better? Be as detailed in your response as possible. Thank you.

I've only seen one ranking for it and it was a national one in US News. I think it was ranked around 120 or so? If I remember correctly there were a couple other Cal States ahead of them.

Don't let the rank turn you away, the business school is fantastic. The classrooms, technology, and professors are great. I got into it this year but I think I'm gonna turn down Cal Poly for UC Irvine.

<< I got into it this year but I think I'm gonna turn down Cal Poly for UC Irvine.>>

Are you aware of the fact that UC Irvine does not offer a degree in business? The closest thing they have is business/managerial economics, which is a far cry from what you learn when you study business itself, which usually features a special concentration like Finance or marketing.

I know that; UCI is also starting a Business Administration major in 2008. It was tough deciding between the two schools, but I think I made the right decision. I'm definitely interested in business, but I'm not 100% sure it's what I want to do. UCI offers more flexibility in changing majors and is pretty much better than Cal Poly in almost every department aside from engineering and architecture.

I want to stay in Southern California and UCI's location is unbeatable. I also have an internship at a hedge fund 5 minutes down the road from UCI. I'll be able to continue interning there which will be nice.

Finally, I'm probably going to have to go to grad school anyway. Whether it be to get a JD or an MBA. So it really doesn't matter whether I have a true undergrad business degree. Now, if Cal Poly's Business School was one of the top 50 ranked nationally; I probably would've chosen Cal Poly. But, I don't even think it's in the top 100 so it's not worth going there over UCI in my opinion.

The Business Administration program at UCI is not a done deal yet, unless there is some very recent news. As to rankings here they are for what they are worth.

UCSD doesn't even have an undergraduate business program.

I'm only looking at schools in California. So I want to compare Cal Poly to other California schools. Very few UCs offer undergrad business. So which California schools which actually offer undergrad business are top choices, aside from of course Berkeley, which is my top choice?

What I'm really looking for is a list of the top undergrad business programs in California! That's what I want.

UCI did not make the top 50 list for graduate school programs in Business this year. (they did the year before which means the programs rankings dropped) So as far as rankings go I don't know that I would view UCI as superior to Cal Poly for a business degree (if one becomes available at UCI) at this point. I do believe that I read that students enrolled into UCI in previous years will not be allowed to change their major into in the business program should one become available in the next year or two. That being said the other reasons listed by nschuchert certainly make sense for his/her school choice.

Look at the rankings I gave you above for what they are worth (peer assessment) and determine which of those schools are in CA. This is about the only quantifiable way to look at undergraduate business programs. If you like Cal Poly it is on the list (means it is a top school) so it is a good program. Visit and see what you think. If you love it there chances are good you will get an excellent education.

These are the CA schools ranked above or the same as Cal Poly SLO for undergraduate Business.

USC
Pepperdine
Santa Clara
San Diego State
UC Riverside
Loyola Marymount
University of San Diego
Cal State University of LA (is ranked equally)
University of San Francisco (is ranked equally)

Six of the nine schools on that list are private. So that leaves Cal State LA, UC Riverside (ugh, terrible area), and San Diego State, a party school.

Thank you for that list. Might I ask where you got it and how reliable it is?

The list is from the paid version of US News which is usually considered the primary source for college rankings.

So what about CSU Fullerton and Long Beach? Are they on that list? I heard they have a pretty good reputation.

Above is the complete list. If they don't appear on it then they didn't make this years rankings.

Note did you read the list?
Below Cal Poly you will also find
129. San Jose State
150. Cal Poly Pomona
150. Cal State Fullerton

It should be noted that Cal Poly has an overall peer assesment score of, I believe, 3.9.

If I may give some input, I think it is sort of reliable although there are other sources. The source of the USNWR poll is primarily peer assessment, which is based on what other college deans and faculty think of a particular business program. I’d venture to say then that the ones that are consistently on that list are probably the more solid programs.

From my understanding, SLO is consistently on that list as is LMU, SDSU, CSU-LA, San Jose, Fullerton, UC Riverside and so on.

collegemom16 can you post the rankings to:
»Accounting
» Entrepreneurship
» Finance

Thanks alot.
