Hey guys and gals! Ive decided to actually take 3 min of my life to create an account instead of being a creepy lurker. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone could help me decide between UCLA and Cal.

Im a transfer student from CC, majoring in Psychology (planning to go into Clinical Psychology down the line), I live in Orange County, and UCLA has been my dream ever since high school when I went to the Santa Monica Promenade to go shopping with a friend, and on our way back we drove by UCLA. I remember thinking wow, if I could go to a school like that

Now, here I am, having second thoughts about UCLA. I live for ADVENTURE and EXPLORING LA now just seems too close to home and I wont be able to grow as much as I would if I was in NorCal. But at the same time, being close to home could be a good thing.

There seems to be more things to do around LA. Cal is a bit intimidating and Im not a huge fan of the semester system. But a part of me feels Ill have the opportunity to go to such a prestigious school such as Cal. Also, a part of me wants to escape the superficiality of SoCal.

Conundrum.

Can anyone give me some thoughts about these two schools? And which one is better for psychology?

I think in your situation, Cal is really the best bet. Their psychology program is really great I heard. I mean, REALLY good. It's also very competitive so congrats on getting in.

I also am in the SoCal area and will probably go to Cal for the change. Its college. You need to experience something new for it. I think so at least...

Nahhh. The workload isn't THAT bad, although you will definitely feel it pushing you. I transferred from CC last fall, commuted from S.F. my first semester, took 20 units for a while (taking a class without the pre-req was a little difficult so I dropped to 16), and I'm doing fine. You just gotta stay on your toes...I've procrastinated heavily this semester and now I'm fighting to keep my GPA above 3.5...

It's not that bad but the expectations are still very high. I don't know about Psych, but in the math/econ/business area about 35% of the class routinely gets raw A's on exams.

Yup. I know because I've felt really bad procrastinating for a below-the-median B when half the class got A's :p I'm actually procrastinating right now as well.
