I just got accepted to the CalArts BFA program in art and had a few questions. I want to know what the program there is like and what I would be learning my four or more years at school. I would also like to know what job opportunities that are possible from the Program in art after school. I didn’t expect to get in because of the acceptance rate at CalArts but now it is a possibility that I could go there. I live in New York so it is a very big decision to move so far away. I really would like to know how good the program actually is and if it would be worth is to go to school there. I also would like to know how hard it is to switch majors if I ended up not liking my major. Please help! Thanks in advance!
Bumping this post my son is interested too. No letter either way yet…
Talk to the faculty. The faculty at CalArts are very nice and accommodating. Shoot them an email and I’m sure they can answer your questions.
I don’t think it’s particularly easy to switch majors. Remember, when you apply, you have to apply to a specific program. You’d have to reapply.
Hey, I live in California and I’ve known people that have gone to Calarts. The acceptance rate is really only because of the animation program. The other programs, like art, writing, dance, etc. are all good, but not the best, according to what I’ve heard. It might be better to apply to schools where you live, because New York might be better depending on what kind of art you want to do. If concept art, you might benefit from taking a chance and moving here because of the art culture. But if you want to do things like abstract art and sculpture, staying in New York is probably better for you in the long run.
