I don’t know why, I guess the math department doesn’t consider the BC Calc topics to be representative of their class or something. The test is just a selection of 4 or 5 questions from a previous math 116 final.

Also, I’m not referring to the placement test. This is completely separate and it’s taken in the advising office on paper. I didn’t know anything about it either until they handed me the test.

The lady had a massive pile of completed tests under her desk at orientation, and I’ve talked about it with a few people so I know it’s not just me :P

anyway, you don’t have to take any additional test(except the online joke precal exam) to place into 215 after u get a 5 in BC.
im not sure if its diff for LSA, but for engineering its straight forward.

Strange, I took calc 1 at UMich while I was in high school (to get credit because I missed too many days of high school calculus) and while I bombed it at my hs, I found it much easier at UMich. I asked why on here (this forum) and people told me that calc 1 was easy at UMich. Interesting…

You should know by now that it really depends upon who you ask.

Most people in lower-level math courses usually have their gifts outside the field of math, and thus are more likely to complain about math classes. An analogous situation is most premeds taking orgo.

You don’t have to take any other exam if you get a 5 on the BC. I just got my override and registered for 285.
Kriz = A- average
then again 285 is full of genius math kids.

hmm i have a question. even if i take calc in hs, will i have to take it at umich? and will taking the calc class at WCC (Washtenaw community college) let me opt out of taking it at mich?

Jester, Calc 1, 2, 3, and Differential Equations will transfer from WCC, Linear algebra will not transfer (except for Math 214 for Engineering students, nothing for LSA).

Tempting, but I’ve got a couple of credits to spare, and am already having a war with my parents about them wanting me to graduate in 5 years. So I think I should be ok.

i took calc 1 in high school and got a 3 on the AB exam, so i took calc 1 somewhat disappointed but happy because i thought it would be easy.

i got a b- on the first exam, and a b- on the second exam.

the 2nd exam was last night. the average is curved to a b-. the scale for a b- was 48-52. and the thing is, a ton of kids dropped after the 1st exam. i’d say the majority of the kids in my class took calculus in hs, and the majority of kids in my class got in the b range.

don’t underestimate calc at the university of michigan.

also, i know 3 kids in calc 3 who will most likely have to retake it.

yeah, I agree with umich2013…
I got a 4 on the AP Calc AB test and took Calc 1 thinking it was going to be easy…
I ended up getting a B on the first exam and idk what on the second. I was so frustrated I skipped the class the next day because I didn’t want to know what my grade on the second exam was. Suuucks. Better to take the AP exams and pass or to take classes at a CC.

The problem with not taking it at Mich is that you need to understand calculus to be successful in engineering, so maybe it’s good to beat yourself to hell taking Mich Calculus than skating by taking it at a CC. And if your score on an AP places you into Michigan’s Calc 2, will you really be ready to do well in it, or are you going to get overwhelmed?

^yeah at first I was happy about getting 5’s on the AP test for the BC test but now I’m afraid that the standard at U of M is so high I’m going to get my ass beat in math. Anyways, I’m taking calc 3 at a CC next semester so hopefully that will prep me for college math
