Calculating GPA for admission to class of 2020?

Does anyone know how Georgia Tech calculates GPA for admission decisions for the class of 2020? In past years they recalculated GPA’s by adding .5 points to AP classes, and for last year average freshman profile GPA was a 3.96 weighted. However, this year, that information is no longer found on the admission website. Just some vague information about looking at your classes in context of what your school offers. I called and inquired, and whoever I spoke to on the phone said, they thought but were not sure, that they just take what the school sends. And, that they no longer recalculate. However, high schools frequently do it differently, and some high schools are much more difficult than others. So, does anyone have any information on how GPA is now calculated for admission purposes for class of 2020?

Thought I would update what I have learned since posting this question. Georgia Texh no longer recalculates your GPA. They take your weighted GPA if your school provides one, and if not your unweighted GPA. They then look over course selection to check and see if you took AP, IB, etc. and how well you did in them. Basically, on this section of the application you need an A average with lots of AP or IB (based on what your school offers) to have a good chance at acceptance. Obviously, there are some exceptions. But, for most applicants that is what they are looking for.

I was wondering the same exact thing… so does this mean that, if you already have a weighted GPA provided by the school, they take that rather than your unweighted GPA? And does this apply for OOS or is it IS only?

So, for example, if one is an OOS student and their unweighted GPA is 3.58, but their weighted GPA is 3.83, Georgia Tech would take the 3.83 GPA (the weighted GPA)?

I am sorry for this silly question, but I am curious, because if GeorgiaTech takes weighted GPA it’ll be beneficial to the students applying there (especially for those with a lot of APs!).

@Lynkos - my understanding from the admissions office is that if you have an unweighted GPA, wether in IS or OOS, they take that. If your school does not list weighted they take unweighted. They do not recaclutate any student’s GPA. They do look at what classes where taken in the context of what was offered at your school to ensure that you have taken a rigours curriculum, as in AP or IB classes.

@Momof3kidsau Awesome. Thank you so much!

To be clear from my post above GTech takes weighted over unweighted for all students, if your school provides a weighted GPA.

Im a IB student and i was wondering how do i calculate my gpa.

and i also want to know how to calculate gpa for igcse

You don’t have to calculate your GPA. They take whatever GPA your school sends. They are not looking for an exact number, just course rigor and how well you did in those classes. Rick Clark, director of admissions, wrote in one of his blogs on holistic admission that GPA is calculated on so many different scales in high school that the number has become pointless. They are just looking for strong grades with a rigorous curriculum.
