I read that Georgia Tech uses the weighted GPA directly from your transcript, but I can’t find anywhere the average GPA for those admitted. I’ve heard of people getting in with 4.1-4.3…Is this true? Does anyone know how high they want it to be?
Thanks
The Georgia Tech Common Data Set, here, https://www.irp.gatech.edu/common-data-set, gives GPA of enrolled students based on a 4.0 scale in Section C11. I can’t find anything on unweighted GPA for admitted students.
From the admissions website:
"The GPA we consider is the one taken directly from your high school transcript. We will use a 100 point GPA, if available, and weighted, if available. If not, we’re happy to consider a 4.0 GPA or similar and/or unweighted GPA.
If your high school does not provide a GPA or you have attended multiple high schools, we will recalculate a weighted 4.0 GPA (0.5 points added for AP, IB, Dual Enrollment & AICE courses) using core courses only".
As to how high they want it to be… It’s relative as schools are variable in grading and particularly in how they weight GPAs… GT (and most competitive schools) isn’t looking for a specific number. They will likely compare your GPA against others from your school (both this year and in recent years) to get an idea about how you performed vs your peers. Also GPA is just one part of the decision process so it’s impossible to answer how high they want it to be other than you should have done extremely well in the majority of your course work.
To be competitive, you should have obtained close to all A’s in a curriculum that includes 8-13 AP/college level courses. GPA is going to vary widely between schools due to differences in weighting, so I wouldn’t worry too much about that number. If you have more than a few Bs (or worse), you’re probably not academically competitive.
