Calculating GPA

In my first semester at a CCC I wasn't quite as concerned with school as I am now and ended up getting a D in one of my classes. I promptly retook the class the following semester and got an A. I noticed today that my transcript says I have a 3.62 GPA, I thought it looked a bit high so I did the calculations myself and noticed that I only have a 3.62 if I completely disregard the D I got in the first semester. So my question is basically, if you get a bad grade in a class and retake the class, does the previous grade count towards your GPA? If not, do the UCs even take notice of the bad grade (even if it doesn't count a D can't help your chances)?

previous grade doesn't count, UC's wouldn't look too much into it, especially if it was in the first semester.

In your case, this is correct. I believe you can retake on a D or lower for a new grade. Can't get rid of C's, though.

Great!! thanks guys

As far as everything I've heard the initial grade won't count against you at all. Obviously you don't want a transcript full of retakes, but one or two won't hurt you at all.

Congrats on retaking the class and getting an A. I did that in high school and it's a lot harder than most people would imagine...
