with the SAT II coming around so quickly, would you recommend getting a new calculator? Is the learning curve hard with these advanced calculators? D has the TI 84 silver edition now.

Those calculators are for calculus-based problems. I will be using the TI-84 Silver Edition on the test as well. I've taken 4 practice tests so far, and none of them required a really advanced calculator. You only need the calculator for three things: 1) algebraic math, 2) trig, and 3) finding zeros. Make sure your "D" (why not say "daughter"?) knows how to solve those equations using a calculator. I recommend "15 Realistic Tests for the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test"; it's by this Russian guy. I've been getting in the 750 range. It's actually probably a little more difficult than the actually test, but has useful calculator tips.

thank you , do you have a link to the book you are using? A new book (March 2008) came out from Meylani. He has a chapter on useful essential graphing techniques for TI 84 and 89; but he also wrote another book for specifically using the 83 & 84 family. We have the first book shown below should we get the other one also?

My son had been using a TI 84, but switched to the Nspire about a month before the SAT II. I think he learned the Nspire quickly enough that he would have used it over the 84 even with only 2 weeks experience. He really likes the Nspire.

He took a couple of Meylani tests and thought they were comparable with the very hardest questions on the real test. I don't remember his Meylani scores, but they were significantly sub 750. He scored 780 on the actual test.

is the nspire more advanced than the ti 89? titanium? i have the ti 89 titanium and i still havent figured out all of the functions yet.. o yeah to answer your question... lets just say my friend got a 800 with ti 83

Ti 89 titanium is the best all around in my opinion.
it is easy to use, and a lifesaver for those who dont know what |6-27i| is.
I have friends who use Nspire, but i personally like 89.

i think we will stick with the 84plus silver edition as introducing a new calculator to an already nerve wrecked student will be counter productive.

she will have to use the Meylani book (83-4 family) or download some of the ticalc.org programs. there are 2 specific programs listed on this site for SAT II Math, which one is better? does the download work with TI84 plus?

I'm using an 83...and I've gotten along just fine

(760 on Barron's Practice Test, up 100 points since two days ago =)

To me, it's not really what calculator, but how well you've mastered it. I wouldn't recommend buying a new calculator and struggling to get used to it with the SAT IIs coming around so soon...

For the AP Calc Exam, my 83 ran out of batteries right before, so I just grabbed my sister's 89 and thought I would get by fine. BOY was it weird trying to adjust. I liked the added features, but getting used to it was quite hectic o.O

does the TI 84 plus already have the formulas / function keys required for the SAT? Do you still need the SAT programs from the ticalc.org also?

Has anyone used this Meylani book for the TI 83-84 family:
