Calculators for College? (Econs and math major)

Am I gonna need those fancy TI calculators in college? I am planning to major in Economics... And planning to take high level math courses.

Yes definitely. It sucks to have to buy a $100 calculator, but you’ll likely use it a ton in your major and its a good investment for college. I’ve got a TI 84 Plus thats been exactly what i’ve needed all throughout college (~3 years now), so unless you need one of the specific models for some reason (Not sure since you’re doing ECON, you might benefit from one of the more specific finance models, I couldn’t tell you firsthand though) you can just get the basic model and be fine during your 4 years.

Thanks Big Cat! What’s your major, by the way? Now I have to start saving money for this…

Anyone majoring in Econs would like to give thoughts as well?

I’m actually a computer science major, which is pretty math heavy itself. Never had anything come up though that’s made me rethink buying the TI 84. Its pretty much the standard graphing calculator. Check out other boards or hit google and see how others feel about using the more specialized TI calculators. May find out something special it does that would be a god send in coursework. If you need a special one later though and end up buying the TI 84, you can get quite a bit back on it though since the price of them hasn’t changed in like a decade, great resale value. Hope that helps.

that’s so great to hear! Thanks so much!
