I just switched my major to Marine Science, and I am required to take calculus; however, I haven't taken a math class in 3 years. I was wondering if it would be easiest to just take the M408K class offered at UT in the fall, or to take the ACC equivalent this summer. I am not much of a math person, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Since you haven’t taken math in a few years and aren’t a “math person” I would recommend taken calculus at a community college or starting off in a pre-cal class at UT. I wondered the same thing when I was started my maths, went into 408K and really struggled since I had no previous knowledge of calculus and did not remember my pre-cal very much :/

Unless you feel comfortable enough with your math skills I’d try to refresh them before jumping into calculus, or just take it at ACC or something.

Unless your major requires Calculus, meaning that the skills you learn will be used in future classes, I would HIGHLY recommend taking it at a community college. Usually, for most majors they just need the credit and will probably never use Calculus skills ever again in their classes (e.g. business majors).

What is your math knowledge like? You’ll need a really firm grip on college level algebra and trigonometry in order to succeed in calculus.

I tried to skip ahead in my math sequence and it did NOT work out well. Math is something that has to be taken in steps with no exceptions.
