Hi everyone,
I live outside of California, but I really want to attend a school there for Computer Science/ Software Engineering. I found a few that I’m interested in but need some input on them from someone that goes there, planning to, or lives in Cali.
-San Jose State
-UC San Diego
-UC Davis
As an OOS student, the Cal States and UC’s give little to no financial aid so you should expect to be full pay. Cal States will cost around $35-40K/year and UC’s around $60+K/year.
CS is probably the most competitive major at the Cal States and UC’s.
What is your UC/CSU GPA (capped weighted)? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
Test scores, EC’s? HS course rigor? Will you meet the UC/CSU a-g course requirements including 1 year of a Visual/Performing Arts course?
@Gumbymom I do meet their requirements. My calculated GPA for CSU is 3.64…
Test Scores: ACT- 25
Good EC’s/volunteering/internships
7 AP Classes; 6 dual enrollment, over 20 honors classes.
Those programs are really competitive and your stats probably won’t let you in.
High Reach for CS at these schools.
Think 4.0+ CSU/UC GPA and ACT of 30+.
CS no for SJSU but Software Engineering could be possible there.
For UC’s, Riverside and Merced are possible.
For Cal states, you should consider all the Cal states except San Jose, Long Beach, Cal poly Pomona and SLO, San Diego state and maybe Fullerton.
If you like SJSU, look at Cal state East Bay. Good CS program and job placement.
These are minimum requirements. You won’t get into Davis nor SD with those stats.
Since you are OOS, your stats have to be better than the in-state minimums.
The public schools you’ve noted were made and paid for by California taxpayers. Those students get priority.
As an OOS, you have to have better and higher stats to get a chance of entry.
You won’t get the CS major because it is impacted at most of the California schools and your non-competitive test scores and GPA.
Your options would be the non-impacted campuses and you would pay full fees since there is no funding for non-residents.
The schools you’ve listed are getting in-state students with 4.0+ and ACT’s over 30.
