California Community Colleges, and Retaking Classes

I go to community college in California (De Anza College to be specific).

It's my first quarter, and I'm doing fairly well. I'm taking 16 units (4 classes), 3 classes I have an "A" in, but one I have a "C+". I have finals coming up, and I think I should be able to bump it into the "B" zone, but I was hoping for an "A".

Now, if I retake the same class next quarter, is it true it will override the first grade I receive in the class?

Will UC's be able to see that I took the class twice?

You can only replace a grade if it is a C or lower. if you retake the course otherwise, the first grade stands. (no average either).

Actually it needs to be lower than a C if you want to retake it. A C can not be retaken. Anything C or above is a passing grade and anything below it is not.

It will override your grade, but yes UCs will be able to see that you took the class twice.

Yes, my mistake. i meant to put D, rather than C. unfortunately, i have two C’s in my academic history, which effect my GPA significantly, i have tried to find a way to get rid of them, but to no avail.

Thanks guys. I might just purposely bomb the final so I get a “D”, then retake the class…

I’m getting sick of seeing people do this crap. Everyone’s entitled to screw up once or twice in their career, retake things and do well the second time around, but screwing up in a class to get an A? Come on.

Side note: If you drop the class right now you’ll get an F in it. See, then you don’t even have to bother taking the final and intentionally bombing it to get a D. :P

Do you really want to spend the next 5 months of your life taking the same class over again? Maybe it’ll put of pre-reqs? What if you end up LEGITIMATELY having to do that later in your college career when it matters even more?

I say take it like an adult, one of the two Cs I have is in a 5 unit class, think about that!

I wouldn’t recommend that. Even if you retake the class and get an A, the first grade (while not a factor in your GPA) will still show up on your transcript. If you do academic renewal, they will not see the grade, but they will know that you got a D or an F in that class because your transcript will indicate that you renewed those units. It’s only your first quarter - a B, or even a C, is not the end of the world.

I’m worried that a C in a 5 unit class will be my Waterloo.

A C in 5 units suggests you had a very rough ride, whatever the circumstances were, but instead of giving up you pulled through and passed the class.

It was a bad semester for me, but since then I’ve had nothing but As and Bs :)

It’s actually a quarter system, so it’s 3 months. But I know what you mean.

Nonetheless, I know I could easily get an “A” if I retook it. The only thing is, I want to be sure failing it this time wouldn’t affect my GPA…

I have a C right now in Calculus I, and I would have to get a 186.7% to get at least a B. Bye Bye Hopes of attending a UC School.

You can retake a C-.
