Retaking a "C" Grade class

I currently go to Moorpark Community College and was interested in petitioning to retake a Physics class that I got a C in. It significantly brings my GPA down and I think that it would be extremely beneficial when applying to UCLA this November. If I were to petition to the dean, what do you think my chances of being able to retake it would be?

I imagine not very high. They aren't swayed too easily. You better have a damn good reason as to why you couldn't get a better grade on the first time around.

Who knows, you might get the dean who says "A C is a very good grade, you know."

You'd probably have more luck petitioning your professor to change that grade to an F.

^ Lmaooooooo

i am looking to do the same thing. however i got a grade c in an elective, so it has nothing to with my major, and it drags my gpa down. is it still unlikely?!?!

a c is a passing grade. Repeats of passing grades are highly unlikely.

Yeah, I was majoring in Psychology and it was one of the classes needed to transfer (Physics) and then I changed to Sociology so I feel stupid for ever taking it and especially for getting a C. I guess it seems like there is nothing I can do about it now. Thanks all for the advice.

Even if the school allows you to retake the course, most likely the UC campus would not factor in the newer grade since the course was completed with a "C" grade previously. This depends on how the final transcript would appear; I'm assuming they wouldn't be removing the "C" grade from your transcript if they allow you to repeat the course.

Thanks so much for the advice. I guess I will just ride it out with a C.

I would recommend taking the same class at a different community college. When your transcripts are sent to the UC campuses you apply to, they will only count the course once (with the highest grade).

lol… this person probably already graduated! And besides, that advice is wrong. The UC’s will count your FIRST grade someone receives in a class as long as it’s a C or better.

Can you retake classes just to boost gpa?

Nope. I had a C in one of my major prereq’s. The only blemish on my academic record and that teacher that issued it was ONLY there for that semester; she got fired right afterward. Even so, it is a passing grade so it cannot be retaken or stricken from the record.

why reply to post from 2008…

Lol I didn’t even notice.

With the budget crises and the difficulty in getting courses at CCCs this is a particularly relevant topic now. My youngest son is still trying to decide whether to go to our local CCC and transfer to a UC someday as a Physics major or go to the CSU he has been accepted at this fall as a Physics major. Right now, it looks like all of the lower division Physics classes at Sac State and all of the Physics classes at Cosumnes River College at any level are going to be closed by the the time he gets to register at either school.

Allowing students to retake a class that they received a C in would be a terrible idea and would make a bad situation even worse. It is bad enough that students are allowed to take a W in a class and register for it again the following semester and that some CCC students who are eligible to transfer and have already been accepted at a four year college can elect stay at their CCC for as many extra years as they want until they get into their “dream school”, depriving new students an opportunity to get into any four year school.

A C is a perfectly acceptable passing grade that causes no adverse consequences such as academic probation or dismissal. To allow a student who gets a C in a Physics class to use their seniority in registration priority to retake the same Physics class simply so they can try to get a better grade (which should be easy to do if they are even halfway intelligent since they have taken the glass before) would deny my son and other freshmen a chance to take the class at all.

It is time to reform the CCC system so that it can be effective in carrying out its primary role of making it possible for students to transfer to a four year school as quickly as possible. Besides not allowing students to retake classes they received a C in, other CCCs should be required to refuse registration to students trying to take courses similar to the one the student received a C in at another CCC. Five Ws in two years should result in academic dismissal. Once a student reaches 60 transferable units they should be required to be able to register for classes only after all other students, including freshmen, have had a chance to register. At 80 transferable units they should be denied registration for any more classes at any CCC.

@Lemaitre: Well, you’re not currently allowed to retake classes you received a passing grade in, and I see no reason why that would change, so I wouldn’t get too worked up about it.

And your last paragraph is a bit… much. Not everyone who goes to CCC is there to transfer to a UC/ CSU. Most classes are an eclectic amalgamation of individuals who are all there for various purposes. I don’t think the entire system needs to be overhauled so that it’s easier for your son to get into classes his first semester. He’ll have priority registration soon enough.
