I'm a senior in high school and deciding between as CSU (california state university) or a UC( university of california) for my pre med undergraduate study(yes I'm sure). I can get into most UC's and CSU's. I want to go to a CSU because it's cheaper and easier to earn a higher gpa for med school. However, a UC is more prestigious and have a generally better reputation than CSU's.

Should I go to a CSU and earn a higher gpa or go to a UC and perhaps get a smaller gpa than I would at a CSU but have a diploma from a more prestigious university?

CSU. They have campuses in wonderful locations and you can really enjoy your undergraduate years! Focus on the MD diploma. Just choose a good one like San Diego State, with access to nightlife and beaches.

It may not be. Have you run the NPC’s. Does your family qualify for aid? The UCs give much better aid. And, some of the lower UCs give merit scholarships as an incentive for you to pick them.

Tell us more…what are your stats?

If your stats would get some merit from UCR, UCM, or another, then I would go there.

The UCs are the “premed schools” in Calif…really not the CSUs. Getting into med school from Calif is hard enough.

Tell us more about your situation…your NPC results, your stats, how much your family will pay, etc. (run an NPC from UCR and see what you’d get). I don’t think the UC NPCs will show merit awards, but it will show if you qualify for need based aid.
