Hi all,

Is it worth going to a UC for pre med and getting average grades(ton of competition) or is it better to go to a CSU and get a higher gpa? I should also probably ask if someone with average grades at a UC would get a higher gpa at a a CSU or someother state school? I feel like there would be less competition at a CSU and would be easier to stand out.

Thank You!

If you get average grades you’re not getting into med school.

Your question is actually more difficult to answer than you think. First, it is a mistake to assume that the kids aren’t bright at a CSU, or that the average CSU kid wouldn’t do as well at a UC. Second, GPA is just one aspect of getting into med school. Much of it really rides on your shoulders. Are you going to get to know some profs so you get good recs? Are you going to find a lab where you can get some research experience? Are you going to get some exposure to clinical medicine (an unofficial requirement)? None of these has a direct linkage to the UC/CSU question, although one could make the argument that being around more pre-med kids gives you more examples of what you need to be doing.
