Calling about application weaknesses

I am currently on Harvard's wait list - does anyone know if they can tell me of any weaknesses in my application if I call admissions?
Thanks!!

If you had a weakness in your application, you would not be waitlisted. I would not suggest calling and asking them to look for one.

You can tell me your profile in a PM and I’ll do a full evaluation, and might give you suggestions for what you can do.

I appreciate it, but I’m pretty sure I know the main weakness - I had a very low SAT math score.
I just wanted to call to see if there was any other sort of fickle reason (you know admissions committees) that I haven’t thought of. Like if they already have enough writing/lit or leadership people or something.

twinmom, i’d like to refute your statement. I was waitlisted and I’m pretty sure I had great weaknesses. There is no doubt in my mind that H made a mistake with me.

So did anyone have the audacity to ask?

i think they’d find it annoying, but i’m still unsure whether or not to call and ask. if it’s something that can’t be corrected now anyway, wouldn’t that sort of call attention to whatever weakness you have?

The better thing would be to send them some additional reason to admit you (i.e., another award you’ve received). They aren’t going to tell you about the weaknesses in your application; you will only get the standard rap about we have so many applications, everybody on the waitlist is qualified, etc., etc.

Blueducky: At a reception for newly admitted students, one of the speakers who had attended Harvard said that most people who are admitted think that it was a mistake.

I agree with Hunt. It’s much better to send additional materials if you have any rather than inquire about weaknesses. They won’t tell you anyway.

I would send additional materials to boost your app, or have one of your recommendation writers call on your behalf (mine offered to do so) - but don’t ask about so-called “weaknesses.” There wouldn’t be much you could do at this point, anyway.

Actually, S’s HS counselor had a frank discussion with his admissions rep about his application’s weaknesses. He was then able to send in some very specific additional material to round out his app. Of course, there’s no way to know if that made a difference, but he was accepted after an EA deferral.

EA? Are we still talking about H? Or is it this from like a million years ago.

No, i’m 100% sure H made a mistake with WL me cuz YPS + Penn all outright rejected me.

I have met lots of people currently at Harvard who were rejected by those schools as well as some that were rejected by Cornell, Wash U., etc. That doesn’t mean a thing.

The current freshman are the first class to not have the SCEA option.
