I'm currently enrolled as a freshman heading into my fall semester and have been conflicted with what major I should have. All my life I've enjoyed art and art classes, but considering the amount of work I hear about art majors, I'm concerned about how I'll perform in my pre-med classes. The thing is, I excel in art and science, but probably not art and science at the same time. As a result my schedule consists of WARP, chem, and if possible a chem lab. I certainly want to have free time for extra-curriculars and simply to be able to study with friends, but I'm rather intimidated by whatever possible assignments in WARP considering I work slowly and tediously.

TL;DR - Should I go for a bio major and excel in pre med classes and do anything art related on my own hours at my own will? Or should attempt to stand out with an art major and die trying?

Feel free to ask me questions, I can't properly express all my concerns in one post without having it appear like a wall of text!

Do you really love biology? I’m a pre-med sophomore at UF. The reason I chose a biology major was because I’ve been fascinated with the subject since I was in elementary school. If you’re not all that interested in biology, stick to your art major. I like the pre-professional biology track because I can fulfill my major and med school requirements at the same time, I take classes about stuff I’m interested in or will help me out in the future, and it allows me to have a flexible schedule for my last year.

Don’t just do a non-science major to stand out; do it because you love it. If you’re worried about maintaining a balance of good grades in art and science classes, just trying to spread out your classes. For example, during your first few semesters, take either 1 major req & 2 med school prerqs (or vice-versa) and a gen ed course. After your gen eds are complete, split your classes evenly with 2 med schools prereqs & 2 major reqs or 3 major reqs & 1 med school prereq.

Well the thing is, I do find biology interesting, heck, whenever I see articles about new medical advances (i.e. curing HIV/AIDS!) I hop right on those to see whats happening! Like if I had to pick between doing science and art homework, I’d pick science over art because its the most straightforward and easy to understand. I enjoy art for its visual appeal, but having had IB Visual Arts prior, I certainly do not enjoy researching for a grade, however on my free time I do like to browse art related websites featuring architecture and product design! I suppose I could simplify by saying I want to make things, but not get graded on them.
