Calling all FILIPINOS applying for Ivies!!!

Kumusta kayo? First of all, how many of you are American residents/citizens? Do admissions offices for the Ivy Leagues differentiate between Filipino Americans and Filipino citizens in Asia or would we all be competing against each other directly??? Also, if you are a Filipino outside the USA, where are you a studying: in the Phils, in an international school, in a state school? ALso what do you think of your chances for getting into your first choice university? All replies much appreciated... Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!

I have a dual citizenship but I'm in the Philippines studying in an International School. :)

hiya joytotheworld!

Where do you study? I have a friend who used to be in Brent and I know some people from IS and Brent (just acquaintances, never really kept in touch with them= but I think they've all graduated now. Are you graduating this year? Going to the US in 2005?

Hello. I'm a Filipino in here, not only applying to Ivies but to all ivies.

Am I insane or what?

The eight Ivy league schools are very different from each each other. They can't all be good a good fit for you. Thus it doesn't make sense to apply to all of them. Consider applying only to those that fit, and add other non-Ivy schools to your list that also are good fits. And make sure one or two of them are safeties.

Yeah, I think you should apply to 2-4 schools just below the ivies such as Duke, JHU or something because every year, I suppose that ivies get thousands of applications from internationals and there's only few spaces for us and I think a few 1st ranked people with 1600s get rejected every year. Also, the way the Ivies pick the successful applicants is very weird and random. So I wouldn't count on them even if you believe you are 100% perfect.
Would you really want to go to Cornell? Does anyone reeaally want to go to Cornell??!!

I'm applying to all Ivies, but not only to Ivies. I have Stanford, MIT, Duke, Rice, Washington U., NYU, UCLA, UCB and others in my list.

For me, it's not really about fit or what. Though I really want to go to some schools (Harvard, Yale, MIT) others are just tests whether I could do it or not.

And yes, I guess I'm insane. ;)

hi paradox_master, no you're not insane, since you're applying not only to Ivies, so you have security... I think it's great you're applying to all Ivies, coz truth be told, you can never be sure with the way admissions go. ANyway, if you are insane that makes me insane too, coz not only have I applied for an Ivy waaaay out of my league but I've applied to universities in 3 different countries with about 7 different courses. We're too young to know exactly what we want to do and where we want to go. Let's just enjoy the ride, eh???

Paradox_master hardly has security with that list of schools. They are all highly selective schools. Stanford, Duke, and MIT are harder to get into than some of the Ivies, and the others listed are not far behind. There is a reasonable chance for even a fairly strong candidate to get rejected at ALL of these universities.

Kids aiming too high and ending up with nowhere to go --> It happens every year here on CC. Like I said, be sure to develop a list that includes a couple of true safety schools.

coureur,

Haha. Yeah, I guess I'm aiming too high. But no worries, I'm aware that I may not be accepted to most. I actually have safeties (colleges with around 60%+ admission rate) but I forgot which schools are they. Hahahahaha.

quetzal,

Interesting. What countries are these? I originally wanted to apply to Korea and Japan, but I only have a little clue about their language.

Cambridge and Oxford, well, I'm considering them too. But I don't think I'll push through, considering that my US college list has almost 20 entries.

And really, I'm having fun. ;)

The UK, the US, and Australia. The UK was supposed to be my first (and only choice) since I go to a British school, and I applied last year, but fees are sooo expensive if you're an international and there's barely any financial aid given, so it's pretty limiting. What might interest you is that you can apply only to one uni in Oxbridge: so... either Oxford or Cambridge not both.

Did You Go To The Brown Summer Program? Are Fil- Chinese Or Chinese And ?

hey guys! im a Filipino too. Im a senior in this all-girls Catholic school in Katipunan..

im applying to 13 schools in the US and 3 in Europe (Florence, Bremen and Paris) :)

yeah im applying to 3 ivies - Harvard, Yale and Princeton (since they follow a need-blind admissions process for intls like me)

good luck to us all!

Hi Pierremarie,

Are you from Miriam or somewhere?

And stemming out from the other thread, I'm from Cagayan. You probably don't know where it is, but I don't blame you.

And yes, good luck to us. How I need it.

paradox_master:

ya? where in Cagayan?

yeah i go to Miriam. it has like the most demanding workload (38 hours per week), but it doesnt offer any AP or honors courses - too bad huh. sometimes the fact that universities abroad arent familiar with my school's system and general curriculum worries me - the adcoms might think that my school has a low quality or something.. although 100% of seniors plan to go to college

have you taken the SATs? would you mind if i ask you how'd you do on them?

ive read a lot of your posts - i seem to see myself in you. funny huh :P

Why, I thought Miriam sends a number of students to the US. It's a quite prestigious school.

Hey, we have 39 hours here. It used to be 40, but decreased by an hour. About the curriculum, what's your rank anyway?

Yeah, I have taken them. (I mean, of course I did ^^) I actually don't want to think about them, considering my horrid scores. Though, may I know yours?

Btw, will you still be taking the SATs this January? I take mine at ISM, and I presume you did too. Maybe we can meet, or something.
