CALS or CoE for Environmental Engineering Major

From my understanding both schools curriculums for the Environmental Engineering major are identical. Is there any advantage applying to one over the other? Also, because Cornell allows you to apply to two schools can I apply to both for the same major and use basically the same supplement essay? Thanks.

I was facing a similar dilemma when applying to Cornell, especially since I live in New York and CALS is so much cheaper for New Yorkers. I went to a College of Engineering Information Session when I visited Cornell and basically learned the difference; the one offered at the College of Engineering is much more hard math and physics based, where as the one offered at CALS is more biological science based, less intensely engineering (that was my interpretation anyway). The advantage lies in the way you want to approach Environmental Engineering. Also, again the reduced price might be a factor if you live in NY. As for the essays, mine where rather different. You cannot submit the same one because if you look at the supplemental essays for the different colleges, they are not asking the same thing. I repeated some ideas in both essays, but in the end they were rather different. Also, with the applying to two colleges (I learned this when I visited), it is guaranteed that your primary choice college will see your application. Your secondary choice college will only see your application id they are unsatisfied with the applications they received for primary choice and ask for the secondary choices. Good luck with your application, sorry I wrote so much, it’s just that I literally just went through this.

Thank you for the reply. It was very helpful. Do you think I would have a better shot and experience at CALS if my math scores and grades are strong, but towards the lower to middle end of students applying for engineering? Again, thank you for your help.

Honestly, apply to the school you would rather attend. Perhaps if you were a girl, that MIGHT help you get into engineering, but there is no guarentee. SAT scores are all relevant. You really should not apply based on which one you think would be easier to get into. You will be happiest once you firgure out which college you believe is the right fit for you, and that will provide you with the best experience. Again, I wish you much luck, Cornell is a great school!
