Caltech Med Scholars

I think we were suppose to be notified by today? Has anyone heard if they have an interview?

I called Caltech and they refered me to UCSD, which in turn said that as of today, they haven't completed reviewing the applications yet.

Thanks, that probably means we'll have to a while longer than :)

thats a relief^^ at least for now. do we have any idea when we should hear back?

yay they finally sent out emails.. only 10 days late

how formal is the interview... jeans/decent top .....or something uber-
professional like we would wear to an Intel fair....?

I just did the google map thing and realized it was ~120 miles between Caltech and La Jolla...

Guess it means we would be doing this back-and-forth every weekend if
we get into the program?

:)

no idea about how formal. i would guess as formal as a regular med school interview? prob a good idea to call if u are really worried.

my understanding is that u dont really do much with ucsd until med school. maybe u might participate in annual programs, but i think u spend the majority of your time at caltech as an undergrad and all ur time at ucsd as a grad student.

and i was actually at caltech last week. the guy next door to my bf is in the program. ill make sure to ask him.

Current/prospective scholars inputs would be of help
for me as I try to clear my mind on why I ticked the
Medical scholars box. :)

1) can anyone confirm that we are not paid for the
mandatory summer participation in Med Scholar
research? (Compared to techers who do usually
get paid for summer research)

2) What did you see as the advantage of the Med
Scholars program? Could you please share your
perspective....

mjchiu2k, i am ambivalent towards interviewers who
are going to form a bad opinion if I wear everyday
work clothes. Just curious what the expectations
were...

1) is it really required? where did u get this information. i really can't find much info on the med scholars program online. my understanding of the relationship between med scholar students and ucsd as undergrad is based solely on the fact sheet:
"Medical Scholars will have the opportunity to attend special lectures and colloquia in conjunction with UC San Diego Medical Scholars that will introduce them to a range of subjects that are part of the medical school experience. Medical Scholars also have the opportunity and will be encouraged to participate in summer research experiences with UC San Diego School of Medicine faculty."

Also did you get an email from the program about like hotels buses etc? And did the "to" field only have 8 ppl? That was the case for me and I am wondering if they are only interviewing 8. That would be sweet as they say they would take 6. I think from what they sent us in the mail, they interviewed 20 last year, so 8 would surprisingly large cut from the previous year.

I gleaned "1)" at some point from threads that appeared same time
last year on CC. Like you , I have a dearth of concrete info on the
program.

No, I have not received the hotel, bus info ... btw the first e-mail was
originally in my spam  I have not replied back and told them
I will be attending though...(maybe you and the other 7 did)

After seeing the post by at least one Lingle scholar last year about just
doing the coursework at Caltech, I am in "evaluate-mode" if I want to
pursue the med scholars ....

IMO, Caltech+ research will be a wild ride by itself without having additional
responsibilities!
:)

what were you thinking when you marked the
med scholars box on the app?

hey sorry about the late response. i got some answers

1)nothing is really required to remain a med scholar besides maintaining your gpa. you can still do surf if you want.
2)There are no "extra" benefits to the med program besides your spot at ucsd

*also, apparently there isn't any relationship w/ ucsd when you are at caltech. at least the guy i talked to hasn't really had contact with them.. but then again he is a just a frosh. im not sure what to expect down the road.

a comment on coursework at caltech. i actually indirectly know one lingle girl.. possibly the one you are talking about. she was across the hall when i stayed at caltech and i dropped into her room a bit. she seems to be going through a rough patch.. but i guess thats another story. but on that note.. if you are going to fall apart, caltech is a great place to do it b/c of the community and support system in place there. Also, i heard course work at caltech isnt really THAT bad. i duno, maybe the people i am talking to are super smart, but my friend is telling me that caltech as a frosh is surprisingly easy. i also know that a lot of people at caltech dont have great time management and get caught up in all the fun stuff you can do there.. which results in not so good grades.

my reason for the med scholars thing. caltech's been THE school for me for a while. I love everything about it; the core (i know this sounds crazy), the student body, the research, the profs, the houses, the size, the location. just everything. my only hesitation about going there is that I don't want to ruin my chances of going to med school b/c of a lower than normal gpa for a premed (many med schools have pretty high gpa cut offs). With the med program, basically I wouldn't have that concern anymore. I want to go somewhere that I will be happy for undergrad AND med school. Hopefully you'll take that into consideration when you are picking programs. Good luck!

^well, keep in mind that your friend has had most of the frosh coursework before. so he's one of the "smarter" people here. but if you've taken the same classes he has, you should be unusually well-prepared too.

^haha yeah thats what i thought.. that boy is ridiculously well off i guess. so his advice is probably very misleading like you said. i prob should talk to some other ppl at caltech b4 i make any judgments.. i want to ignorantly believe that i wont die when i go to caltech.. but i probably will >.<

Hey, so does anyone know how many people applied for the Med Scholars Program? I sent in my materials extremely late, so I'm not sure about my chances at getting this thing. And are all of you guys planning on a career in practicing medicine?

I am a little confused what you are referring to. I am guessing you are saying you sent in your info to register for an interview a little late which i would doubt it will change your chances at getting in. You would think acceptances would be primarily based on how your interviews go. And the people deciding probably won't know when you sent in your info.. most of the time people handling the logistical stuff arent part of the admission committee right?
