My son plans on entering a tier one school (qualified, but needs to have his ticket drawn in the admissions lottery) for engineering in 2010. He is a US citizen, but has attended boarding school in London for the last five years and we think that his college preparation has been superb. Five years of each Maths (and a year of Further Maths), Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

Last week, he had an interview at one of the Cambridge colleges. It was a day-long affair which included a Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) test for the first 1.5 hours. This was followed in the afternoon by two pretty rigorous interviews, each by a different faculty member.

He was pushed during the interviews to demonstrate both his current knowledge and his ability to use information fed to him by the interviewer to reach new conclusions. In effect, he knew things that he didn't know he knew, as the interviewer took him into deeper and deeper water. It was an eye-opening experience for him.

That said, I'm interested in hearing the perceptions, experiences or information that others might have relating to the study of engineering at Cambridge in relation to other tier one schools in the US. Thanks!
