i want to get a new camera... and i've been looking for way too long.
basically i just want one with fast startup, minimal shutter lag and good shot-to-shot times, but also nice colors. around $200-300
i would've gone for one of the canon powershots except i'm scared i'll get one with a defective lcd screen. grrrr.
does anyone have any recommendations?

check out cnet for reviews. you cant go wrong with nikon or canon but stay away from overpriced sonys. my cousin has the canon sd600 and he is very happy with it. i am actually in the market for a new camera as well and have been leaning towards the canon sd630.

The Canon SD series fits all your needs.

I second getting a Canon. I have an A-series and love it!

I have a Canon sd630. i think it is an excellent camera, and as of yet, i have had ZERO problems with it. i dont think you could go wrong with any of the sd powershots.

Can't go wrong with the Sony DSC-W50. It's amazing, I love using this camera. Small, sleek, and takes amazing photos. My only thing is that the software isn't that great, but there's plenty of free software on the net to make up. I added a gig of memory I bought from Newegg, and was able to record 50minutes of video. I rate the camera a 5/5.

my nikon takes amazing pictures, however when using the flash the time between shots is kind of slow.. but the pictures come out gorgeous and i love it.

i just got the canon powershot sd450 and i LOVE it! it's really light and compact and takes awesome pictures. list price is about $300 but i got it online for $250. check out www.bizrate.com, they can find the cheapest prices online and reviews and such for whatever model you choose

yep, cannon powershot SDs are very nice

Cannon SD 600 at amazon for 300. It's a great camera.

you want it to be small for being at school, it's obnoxious to carry around a bigger camera, i was so annoyed w/ my old one i caved and bought a new one pretty much just for size reasons

My dad has a Canon A510--I think that's what it is, at least--and it takes really good pictures and is pretty user-friendly (except, of course, my mom still can't figure out how to take pictures on it...). My friend got a Casio (??) for graduation, a little skinny purple thing, and she loves it too. I'd think its size would make it a good choice for school--easy to carry around and hide.

i forgot to say, mine is a casio exilm w/ 500 mp and it takes great pictures and is tiny

Well, I have a Nikon D70 and I love it. Alas, it's neither small nor cheap.
