I accepted a camp counselor job at a summer camp in the midwest a couple of weeks ago. However, I just found out about an internship through my school that really interests me. I would feel badly about backing out of the job that I already accepted, but if I had the opportunity to get this internship I just learned about, I would be very tempted to take it because I will be studying abroad next summer and won't be able to apply then. I don't know what to do in this situation- is it wrong for me to pursue the internship? I imagine there is still time to find a substitute for me at the summer camp, but I'm still worried about causing any issues.

If you accepted the job already, the camp is counting on you to be on their staff this summer. You don’t know how long the application process will take for the internship, and if you’ll get it, and how much time that would leave the camp. You don’t know if the camp staffed based on the demographics of their staff (so if you’re good at say, swimming or something, they were counting on you). You don’t know where the camp is in their hiring process and if they even have the resources to find a substitute.

Bottom line: you made a comittment. You’re an adult. Honor it.
