campus entertainment, fairs, traditions

Can someone tell me which big (relatively big...) name performers have come to Tufts in recent years? For example, on college tours I've been told that Kid Cudi, Girl talk, Maroon 5, etc came and performed there this year. Who came to Tufts? How often do these types of performers come? I'm wondering if the proximity to Boston brings these performers to campus or actually precludes them from coming.

Also, are there annual fairs, festivals, traditions that highlight the year? If so, please describe therm.

Thanks.

Without knowing the answer to “how many come to Tufts”, it occurs to me that your question is somewhat irrelevant. Tufts students are very close to both the Cambridge and Boston music and entertainment markets and can see world class entertainment (headliners and undiscovered) anytime they want… With few exceptions students would take a short walk, bus or subway ride to any entertainment they want to see.

Thanks - but I do think it is relevant. On campus entertainment and traditions helps to define a student culture. I was told that students don’t really leave campus that often. Of course if a big name performer was in Boston one might go in to town for that, but that is different than celebrating and enjoying on campus with your own set of friends. In addition, by knowing the types of entertainers that the students/administration have brought to campus lately it seems that one could draw a reasonable conclusion about an aspect of student culture.

I find that many students do leave campus fairly often. Davis square and Harvard square offer plenty of options for students who don’t want to travel the whole way into Boston too. As far as campus performers go, Tufts Spring Fling is definitely the biggest entertainment event. Past performers have included Drake, Lupe Fiasco, The Decemberists, T.I., Dropkick Murphys, Guster, Ludacris, Spoon, Violent Femmes, Ben Folds Five, and Asher Roth. Passion Pit is coming to Tufts this fall.

In the first month of school and D has been to see Asher Roth downtown and Sam Adams at the MFA…so it seems Tufts students do get off campus a bit.

Thanks - this helps a lot. Seems like there is a balance between pursuing personal interests and enjoying a campus wide event. I was surprised to hear that people don’t leave campus much, it didn’t make sense to me, and its nice to know it isn’t necessarily true.

lol, your daughter paid to see “Sammy Adams”?

I think you will find that most Tufts students consider Somerville and Cambridge to be part of the Tufts Campus…

My daughter, a sophomore, attends concerts in Boston on a regular basis. She also goes into Boston to meet up with friends from other schools. I’m pretty certain she is off campus every week, including going to Davis and Harvard Squares, which probably are considered extensions of the campus by Tufts students because of their close proximity and accessibility.
