Campus Housing info....& Honors Housing Info

Well I’m pretty much set on business. I’d guess China would be big for those in business. But I’d rather be in Europe or Australia.

Thanks for the Oxford info. Son is dying to go to England. So, this is an organized program with adult supervision with some structure to it?

We went to a study abroad session at another school, and the kids talked about how much fun they had and how immersed they got in the culture, but had no adult supervision from their university, or any university, for that matter. They simply went to classes in a foreign land, lived in apartments, and had the freedom to explore the surrounding countries.

Oh, but they did carry a card with them that said something to the effect, “I’m an American student at such and such university, please contact so and so in case of emergency.”

Needless to say, that session did not go over well, with both the parents and the kids.

Oxford summer is led by dr halli and other profs

jrt336, you can go wherever you want to go, as long as you can figure out a way to pay for it. I forgot about Australia and New Zealand, those would also be great options. China may be great for business students, but I myself would rather study abroad somewhere else.

Montegut, yes this program is somewhat supervised, moreso than the situation you described. The Hallis are well liked teachers in the Honors college and it is a favorite study abroad program. There are other options in the UK, but they would most likely be affiliated programs with non-UA faculty.

Going and enrolling as a student at a foreign university for a semester and having tons of freedom appeals to certain students while others feel that it is dangerous. I’m the type of person who would enjoy a situation like this, but I see it much like my life at UA, albeit in a different country. It’s much like choosing a college, some have to be close to home, others, like myself, are content living 2000+ plus miles away. UA focuses more on semi-supervised study abroads than non-supervised ones. Either way though, a student can find time to hop on a train and go somewhere if they really want to.

A student can go during the school year if a longer experience is wanted

Can I submit the UFE app on Friday (Dec 4) or does it have to be submitted before Dec 4? Also, I was just looking at the UHP app, do I have to do the CBHP app right now, before I apply to UFE? I have one more UFE essay, and I don’t want to have to write the CBHP one before that. Is CBHP really that important for business majors? It seems like it would be more useful to kids in other majors, like engineering.

And when they say the average GPA is 4.0 for Fellows, does that mean unweighted or just the GPA shown on the transcript?

If it is a deadline of Dec 4, then you can submit it on Dec 4, but preferably before UA closes for the day just to be sure. I don’t think you have to submit the CBHP app at the same time, but idk. Dr. Sharpe (head of CBHP) is actually a professor in CBA, but there is no requirement to be in CBA to be in CBHP. It would be helpful for a business major, but AFAIK, the three CBHP people I know are not business majors, as I think momreads’s son is an A&S econ major. If you don’t get into CBHP or UFE, there are still a lot of other interesting programs you can join later in your college career. UA uses whatever GPA you have on your transcript, so many people do have above a 4.0. At UA itself, the max GPA is 4.33.

the UFE app needs to be submitted by midnight on dec. 4

You don’t have to do the CBHP part now. That part is due in January.

CBHP is useful for virtually any major. It isn’t a “computer science” thing - it’s a research opportunity. http://honors.cbhp.ua.edu/index.php?page=computer-based-honors-program</a></p>

The opportunities in all fields is amazing. It is the nation’s first university-wide undergraduate research program. I have had the pleasure of sitting in several CBHP research presentations and they range from Library Science to Marine Biology to Diabetes Research to Financial Investments to whatever.

The only app I see for CBHP is on the UHP app, and that has to be done before the UFE one. Am I missing something?

It is a unified application, but you don’t have to put in the CBHP info yet. Just do the UHP part and submit. Then, later, you can electronically retrieve your app thru MyBama, do the CBHP part, and re-submit. It will be in the Academics tab in the left side column.

So should I mark that I am applying to UHP and CBHP and only do the UHP now, or just mark UHP for now and do that one?

If you’re unable to submit with CBHP checked without the essays/resume, then just check UHP box for now since you’re trying to get that done for UFE application. Then retrieve it back later and do CBHP. If you have any trouble retrieving it to do the CBHP portion, then email Mrs. Jane Batson at CBHP. She takes care of everything CHBP. jbatson@AALAN.UA.EDU

thanks. I have so many questions because I never thought of UA as a possibility until about 2 weeks ago.

^^^

No problem…Ask away!

How do out of state students select housing? Is there a roommate matching service? I know other schools have a roommate survey for the kids to fill out with their living traits - messy/neat, night owl/early bird, sporty/studious, etc… How does an oos kid find a good fit in roommate(s)?

Many kids join their Facebook class and meet future roommates thru that.

http://housing.ua.edu/index.cfm</a></p>

There is also a roommate finder [Housing and Residential Communities Roommate Finder Home Page](http://housing.ua.edu/roommate/intro.asp)

Freshman room selection guide: http://housing.ua.edu/2009%20Fall%20Online%20Room%20Selection%20Guide%20New%20Students.pdf</a></p>

The facebook group works a lot better than the housing roommate finder thing, IMHO. There should be a discussion/thread on the facebook group with a roommate questionnaire on it. As for OOS rooming with IS, it’s very possible and really no different than rooming with another OOS student. Unless the differences between the roommates are really extreme, things like going to bed at 11 versus 2 are negligible.

^^

Glad to hear that the FB method is a good one.

Frankly, in a 4 room suite, I think it’s better for an OOS kid to room with a mix of kids. Having at least one in-state suitemate can be helpful.

And, if a student is in one of these many private suites, the conflicting “bed-times” don’t really come into play unless one of the other suitemates is too ridiculously noisy at night, but that should be easily dealt with.

But, it a one room double standard, I can see some advantages for two OOS kids to room together. But, I’m sure either way has worked well for many.
