Campus Job

I got admitted ED at Lafayette College (Yayyyyy!!!), and I got a financial aid package which was composed by grant, loan and campus job. My question is : How many hours per week are needed to complete a $3000 (the whole year) if the minimum salary is about $7.25 per hour?

about 15hrs/week, for 15 weeks a semester, and about 12% taxes to make to $3000 after tax, in a year. You start off with $7.70 at most places, and make $0.25/hr more every year you work there after that.

Its totally manageable time wise but its up to you to reach that many number of hours. You have to find multiple jobs. As the year goes by, things get easier because you can get research with professors and stuff.

Also, I saw in your past posts that you are an international student (me too  ), so if you stay here during winter and summer breaks because going home is just not feasible, then you can work during those breaks. There are research positions that provide free housing for most of the break.

I was going to ask a similar question, I’ve been offered a similar package. Are campus jobs easy to get?

Also, what are the costs of winter/summer break housing, and what is the difference between ‘interim’ and ‘inter-session’ housing?

When you first get here, you are assigned a few hours (4-6, i think). If you want more than that, you need to find the hours yourself. You need to go talk to people, different places to get jobs.

Summer Intersession is the time between official end of summer session, and beginning of fall semester classes (somewhere along 2nd week of august until school starts). Summer session is 12 weeks long, starting the monday after commencement until August 10 or something like that.
Interim is the 3 week period in january right before school starts, where you can take an interim class, or do research. The time between end of Fall semester (mid december) and interim is called Winter Intersession. To make it more clear, here’s an example from this year.

Summer session: May 20-August 10
Summer Intersession: August 11-August 26
Winter Intersession: December 18-January 6
Interim: January 7-January 27

For summer housing, it costs ~$1000 for the summer break, and ~$140 for the summer intersession. Winter break (interim) costs ~$350 and winter intersession is ~$140.

If you do research on campus, only the summer session and interim session is covered. You will have to pay out of your pocket for both the intersession if you stay here. Aside from these costs, you will also have to pay for food. That can be anywhere from $300-$600 for the summer session.

I thought I might add this as well, even if its probably not the best place to go but is still important.* **

You also need to get health insurance, which is not included in financial aid package. The school’s health insurance costs over the past 4 years is this:
2009: $1331/year
2010: $1500/year
2011: $1990/year
2012: $2500/year

There are external health insurance you can buy, available to international students only, that costs about $400/year but know that they are crappy and don’t cover much when you need it the most.

Thank you for all the information @sixstringsrocker. :D

Thanks @sixstringsrocker!
