Campus Navigation Problem?

I have noticed that my campus map does an unsatisfactory job at guiding students and visitors around campus especially to new areas and large complexes. I was wondering if any other individuals face the same problem and would benefit from an interactive application that guides users to any building or any room? Any feedback would be helpful!

Google maps has been sufficient for my navigation means on campus. Students on campus are usually very helpful too when you’re lost.

A lot of schools already have an app like this. Many of them will take you from your current location to any room on the campus, and to any location in the general campus area.

I’m still at a CC that is fairly small and easy to navigate. I’m transferring after this year though, and I’ve gone on several campus visits recently. UIUC has a wonderful navigation app like this. It made it very easy to get around. This trip was sponsored by my community college, and a group of students went with one of our academic advisers. After the campus tour, we went to have lunch. We asked the tour guide what the best pizza place in town was, and he told us. We punched it into the UIUC app and it navigated us across campus and right to this pizza place very easily.

Google Maps and similar apps will do this, but the problem is that they don’t really account for the countless sidewalks and such in between the buildings on campus. They mainly just cover the main roads, and they certainly don’t navigate you to different class rooms. It made navigating the campus a breeze.

This is a good idea in theory, but like mentioned above, many campuses already have their own navigational aides. When that doesn’t suffice, I usually use Google Maps and input my destination, turn on location services and then tap “Directions from Here”.

I mean, it might work for your school if all the buildings look similar or it’s especially hard to find your way around, who knows. Good luck building your app!

My undergrad school had maps everywhere because the campus was quite large. You could also print out a copy of the school map. They usually put that on their website. Or just keep a digital copy on your phone.
