Campus

GW is one of my top options right now for college. However, I haven't viewed campus (yet). Can someone please tell me the general feel/description of campus and provide links of pictures if possible? Thanks!

It is a very urban campus. The buildings are all fronted by streets which are moderately busy. There is very little grass, but a nice amount of tress.

You are a few blocks from the white house and other monuments. It would be a very cool place to go to school if you want to go to school in a City.

I would visit the campus before going if at all possible. At a minimum, I would download Goggle Earth which allows you to “walk” down the streets at its street level view.

It is an urban campus, but it’s fairly well contained. You definitely know when you are on and off campus, and the campus and the surrounding area feel very safe. It’s say that about 75% of the buildings within “campus limits” are owned by GW. Of the other 25%, almost all were apartment buildings generally filled with GW seniors and stores/shops/restaurants. There were definitely some private buildings, maybe 10-15%. There is definitely not a lot of grass (thank god - I’m allergic), but it looks like landscaping tried to do what they could. The campus is actually quite small. We were able to walk from the Marvin Center (upper middle campus) to Thurston (one of the furthest points on the south east) in a matter of minutes. It would be reasonable to say you could walk from the Elliot School to the other side of campus in ten minutes or less. I didn’t see many people walking around that didn’t look like students. In fact, a lot of students were even wearing GW memorabilia. There were a lot of parked cars, but there was almost no actual car traffic.

The Mount Vernon Campus is another story. It’s pretty small. It has a lot of buildings, but they are almost exclusively residential. There is only one academic/all-purpose building and it seems to be very small. The dining hall was also very small. Heck, even the rooms seemed small (but not unreasonable). It was green, but personally, I didn’t like it.

I liked the Mount Vernon campus. The day I visited the Foggy Bottom campus was really crazy busy. Lots of traffic, lots of students. I felt like Mount Vernon was a place to unwind. I’m a really outgoing person though so I’m having a hard time trying to decide where to live!
