Can a good college essay and standardized test scores make up for decent grades?

Ok, my GPA (unweighted) sucks, well, it's a B average, 3.0. I believe that I can get my ACT score up from a 29 to at least a 30, maybe even to a 32.

Along with that, I believe that I'll get at least 1 good recommendation letter. Oh, and I think that I'll somewhat rock a college essay or interview.

So, with that being said, could reach schools become more of a reality?

high school transcript is probably most important piece of the application…

A high test score will help for state flagships, where there are competitive admissions. A high test score combined with a 3.0 is not going to get you into many, if any, Top 25 schools (national or LAC), unless you’re pulling close to a 4.0 on a killer schedule junior and senior year, the legendary upward trend.

@MrMom62‌ I wouldn’t say a “killer” schedule, but at every available option, I take the hardest classes. This might not mean anything, but I’m an AP Scholar and will have taken 10 AP tests before I graduate.
