Can a middle of the road (politically) student fit in at UCSC?

My son was accepted to UCSC in CS. We are from the Bay Area and are fairly liberal, however, my son is not into the SJW scene and is more middle of the road politically. He’s not outspoken politically and isn’t interested in politics a huge amount (for example, he doesn’t go on protest marches). I love UCSC as a choice for him but I’m concerned that the culture of UCSC will be too much progressive politics that are ‘in your face’ so to speak and discourages different opinions. Is that a major part of the culture at UCSC? Can a student avoid that but still feel a part of the school and campus? From the Chancellor’s reception in Concord we felt that it might be a problem. We’re attending an admitted students tour in a couple of weeks but sometimes you can’t really tell things accurately from tours. Poster boards or announcements on meetings regarding SJW issues wouldn’t be a problem, just anything that could be ‘shouty’ or pushy. I’m thinking of some of the things that have taken place at Berkeley in the past couple of years. While I absolutely support students’ rights to express themselves, it’s just not the right environment for my son and I’m trying to suss that out. Any opinions and examples would be much appreciated.

I would love to read any feedback as well. We are a liberal family from Washington State but have same concerns as yours. Can you tell me what “SJW” means?
