Can additional recommendation letters be submitted online through Common App?

Hi, I'm a senior applying to several colleges/universities through the Common App. I would like to have my science research mentor write a rec letter and submit it online via the Common App so he doesn't have to make several copies and mail them out. Although I know that the two academic teacher recs can be submitted online with the Common App, I don't know if additional recs can be submitted this way.

Please reply if you have any idea! I really don't want to have to call every single admissions office if there's a general rule about this. Also, sources where you got the info would be great. Thanks!

this depends on the school. Some will let you add additional recommenders beyond the number that are required and some will not. Go to the school forms section in each of your schools and check the instructions. I was able to add my debate coach to most of my schools this way, but not all. (I just added him as a third teacher.) For schools that don’t allow you to add an additional recommender, he’ll have to send in a paper rec.

Yeah, I’m going to check with the specific schools. Thank you for answering both of my questions.

@griffen: I’m trying to do the exact same thing! I’m curious, though…I want to list my debate coach as an additional recommendation even though I’ve never had him as a classroom teacher. Did you list the subject for your debate coach as the subject s/he teaches or “other?”

You definitely don’t want to list him/her for a subject that he/she didn’t teach you. I put mine down as ‘other’.

I am actually going to be mailing my additional rec letter into the college. This is what the college said to do. It probably varies per college.
