To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing this letter to explain the circumstances surrounding my poor performance during the 2015-2016 academic year in hopes that I may be given another chance to pursue a college education with University at ********.

I acknowledge that I had a very difficult time during that academic year, and as a result my grades suffered tremendously. Financial issues, illness, and especially my own attitude towards my education contributed to my academic conflicts.

When I first transferred into U* I was dependent on my family to provide financial support. Unfortunately due to sudden financial burden my family was unable to fully support me at the expense of potentially losing their house and business. This financial situation lead me to work remotely for a tech company which had me work long hours at any time period within the day or night - which regrettably I had prioritized over my attendance. Mid-spring semester I had fallen ill with multiple infections which later lead to an allergic reaction to the medication I was given - I was unable to attend class or labs for nearly a month as a result. As well, my own attitude of trying to learn material on my own without assistance certainly has caused issues. I did not prioritize my studies at the time as I was too distracted with our financial situation.

In the time that I was away I started to work full-time in a flagship pharmacy as a technician. This has allowed me to pay off my debts, and accumulate enough savings to support me through the year. My mother also found a job as a registered nurse and would be willing to financially support me if need be. This would remove any financial burden that would potentially distract me.

As a goal I pursued becoming a nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician through the PTCB with the help of pharmacists and other CPhTs. This further developed my discipline, and taught me time management skills which I had used to separate studying, work, and life. Overall this has not only given me experience in the field, time management skills, but also the motivation I need to continue to pursue a higher education.

Communication is the key to success, and unfortunately I had always overlooked it. I have realised that instead of trying to resolve all of my burdens on my own I should have communicated with my advisor, and professors. Not using office hours and tutoring sessions is one of the biggest mistakes I’ve made. Especially being a transfer student I had not explored of all of the services provided to me. Trying to learn difficult material that I did not have a grasp on only led to frustration and demoralization. I now understand that I should not avoid my professors and TAs, and should talk to them earlier in the semester if I’m struggling with grades or personal issues

If I am given a second chance to continue my education I will:
*Focus solely on academics by taking a leave of absence from my employment.
*Assure that my financial situation is sorted prior to the start of the semester.
*Working closely with my academic advisor to create a plan to get back on track
*Communicate with my professors, and TAs not only for educational reasons, but if any other issues arise.
*Utilize to the full ability all the resources provided to me such as financial aid, counseling, office hours, tutoring, and workshops.
*Retake the courses I have received poor grades or have failed in to receive a higher GPA .
*Take courses over the Winter/Summer semester to raise my GPA.

I understand how this has impacted my work as it has shown in my grades over that academic year, and as a hard-working student I’m disappointed about this. It has been reflected in my previous work that I have been able to succeed. That year is not an indication of my work ethic. I would like to continue my major as I was deeply involved within my subject, have been passionate about my studies, and extracurricular activities in my previous university. I need an another opportunity to show my true potential now that my burdens are solved. I have taken many steps to ensure my success for going forward with my studies and pursue receiving an undergraduate degree. Thank you for considering this appeal.

Sincerely,
