I am an incoming freshman, I took two years of physics in high school (regular, and then AP C: Mechanics), and I did okay on both, I got Bs when I'm mostly an A student, so I'm not that strong in physics, but I really do enjoy it. I'm thinking about studying something medical, but right now, I'm undecided, so I could switch any time.

I've been told to take Physics 135, but since the lab for that is full, I can't take it now anyway. So, I could either wait until next semester (which might hurt because I'm still fresh off my high school class), or I could take Physics 140 now. I feel like I am prepared for 140 and could do well, but I hear it is really hard and only for engineering students. I don't THINK I'm going into engineering, but I still want to take this course. Would I HAVE to take Physics 240 and 340 after, or would 140 give me sufficient credit for a pre-med type student? Also, my professor would be Uher, how is he, if anyone knows?

Any other advice?? I don't want my first semester to be too difficult, but I'm worried it might be with 140 (I'm also taking Calc 115 (I had Calc 1 in high school too), Psych 111, and Spanish). Thanks for any help!

Oh, also, I do have one other option… Physics 116, From Quarks to Cosmos. This seems super interesting to me, but if I am going to HAVE to take either 135 or 140, I feel like I should do that now…

Well I can’t offer much advice on which to choose, but for ME I would probably end up taking Physics 135 (I’ll most likely be taking physics next year since I’m also pre-med). Also, you do need an entire year of physics with a lab for pretty much every medical school so you would have to end up taking 240 with a lab as well. Good luck!

Oh, ok, I see. So I would either have to take Physics 140/240, OR 135/235. I think I would be more interested in the 140/240 sequence, because that one could be used for EITHER engineering or pre-med, correct? Is the 140/240 sequence significantly more difficult?

It seems like you’d rather take 140/240 so just do that! I’m not too sure on the difficulty, but from what I’ve heard 235/240 are both fairly challenging.

I took Physics 140 in the Winter semester. I can say that it’s not TOO difficult, I got a B in it. I’m an engineering student, but I wouldn’t let NOT being an engineering student deter you from taking the class. The majority of the class is engineering students, though. I can’t speak from experience for 135, but I’ve heard that it’s definitely easier.

Physics 140/240 can be used for either pre-med or engineering, that’s correct. If you have any other questions about 140, feel free to ask! :D

You seem to have a decent amount of high school physics background. 140 is definitely harder but it starts very slow if you have an prior physics experience. Then it hits a point around the first exam and just takes off. If you’ve never had physics before this would be where you start to do poorly. But, since you had AP Physics already I don’t think 140 will be that hard for you. The curve can be pretty generous too. I walked away with an A+ and I failed the second exam.

As for being pre med, you and damn near every other freshman. I know you GPA will be super important, even to the point where what classes you take may come down to which is easiest to get an A in. In that case, 135 would be the way to go, you’d private get bored taking it.
