Can getting an F for a first quarter grade really damage your chances of admission?

To clarify:

THIS DID NOT HAPPEN TO ME.

Instead, it happened to a close friend of mine who takes HL Chemistry.

I know people say that you should avoid Cs and such, but how damaging can an F be?

Some schools will want quarter grades. If so, your friend is in big trouble. If your friend can pull up to a C for the semester grade, he/she may salvage chances.
