I've been admitted to UIUC and I am strongly considering going there, however I'm waiting to hear back from some other schools. However, if i choose to go there i want to get my dorm locked up now.

So, my question is can I accept the offer of admission and then not go there later if I choose?

reserve a room in private housing, and ask how long you can keep it reserved etc..

public will charge you 2500 if you say yes to a spot and not show up, and the concept of reserve is unfamiliar, i think.. you can get away without the 2500 dollar fine if you tell them before this and that deadline though, so check that out if you really want the public dorms :p

other than that, to all my knowledge, saying yes to a college and later retracting it is fully legit (could be personal reasons etc, which is not the business of the college in the first place). just double check!

As long as you let them know in writing prior to May 15, all but $50.00 is refundable. After this date, you are not liable for the $2000.00 fine if you choose to not attend the university, but you would forfeit the entire $200.00 deposit. you are only liable for the $2000.00 fine if you choose to attend the university but not use the housing they assign you (like decide to go to private housing.)

You also have up to May 15 to preference a roommate.

From what I understand, you should go ahead and sign up for housing if you think you might attend UIUC, (and are willing to forgo $50.00) because housing assignments are made based on the date they receive the housing contract.
