Hi guys, I currently enrolled in a university in the US for the freshman year, but I want to move to other schools. When I asked the Dean she said I should apply as a transfer student. However, my academic result was terrible (I didn’t fit in well with the environment, not because it’s hard). I think if applying as a freshman I may have a better shot (especially regarding scholarship, since I think generally transfer students receive less than freshman). What do you guys think? Is it required for me to “mention” that I did study in that school? I’m an international btw.
Thank you very much!
There is a central database of schools that if the school you attend is a member of, anyone looking you up can determine that you attended that school. They cannot see the grades you got but they can see dates of attendance. If you google it you can find the database. Most US schools are members. Some internationals are and some are not. This does not mean even if they are not members now that they will not join at some point in the future.
You can’t hide the fact that you have already been at college. Apply as a transfer student.
There are no do overs. Those grades will follow you. You must apply as a transfer student.
@SeekingPam @Lindagaf @Rdtsmith What do you guys think if I enroll in a community college to earn better grades and transfer? Will that increase my chance?
It probably would improve your chances. But that original college still always needs to be reported.
I think com college is a very good idea.
Community College is a good idea indeed, but your full transcript (first university, community college) will follow you to your new university. However your GPA will not, so although your transcript follows you, you’ll get a “do over” for a new GPA at the community college.
What’s wrong “socially” with the college you’re at?
@MYOS1634 I think because the college is too interdisciplinary (focusing on too many aspects without in-depth knowledge - which is something I need). I think the curriculum is great, but there are not courses I’m interested in and the lectures are superficial. Also lack of great extracurricular activities.
Can you guys suggest me on transferring from community college? I mean, if I take as many courses available for one semester as possible will that be good (I plan to study in community college for one year only than transfer, and I’m confident that I have great academic foundation so taking more courses in a CC can show how I can make a do-over better)? Also, is studying at a CC gonna hurt my chance? I don’t know if the admissions officers from top-notch universities are biased against CC or not,
Also, do I need to send my SAT/ACT score for transfer if I transfer from CC?
You wouldn’t get into “top notch universities” (by which I guess you mean Top 25 universities/LACs) from a CC, except for USC or CALS/ILR at Cornell or GS at Columbia. For really “top” universities, you need to have a compelling story beside I messed up at my original university (ie., teen parent, very low income) to transfer from a CC, otherwise transfers are “lateral” (from other top universities) and are very, very rare.
Also, note that transfers get lousy aid so you’d lose your scholarship if you need one.
Finally, CC’s are likely to be even more superficial, NOT more “in-depth” than your current university so you’ll have to buckle down and work through it.
If possible try to find a way to work through where you are it sounds like.
You’ll need to check each school in which you are interested. Each has their own transfer requirements.
