Can I apply as a Freshman?

Hi, I'm from Canada.

I applied to US and Canadian colleges this year. I got accepted in 2 colleges here in Canada & 2 in the US. However, the US colleges didn't offer me enough financial aid so I can't attend either of them. But, I don't really want to go to a college here in Canada (since I would prefer to get a liberal arts education). So, I'm quite happy to take a year gap and reapply to US next year.

But here's the problem, I accepted the offer from one of the Canadian colleges (due to parental pressure, which I'm regretting now since I don't want to go there). So since I accepted an offer from a college (but I am not going to enroll), would I still be able to apply to the US as a freshman? Or would they consider me a transfer?

And I heard that US colleges use "National Student Clearinghouse". So, I assume that they can find out that 'I got accepted to a few colleges in US & received financial aid but didn't enroll in any of them'. Would that be a problem for my application?

If you haven’t completed any college classes, then you’re good to go as a freshman applicant :)

As long as you don’t register or take classes you will still be considered a fr applicant. Be careful though, at some US colleges, as little as 1 post-HS course will make you a transfer applicant.

Call the college whose offer you accepted and ask about how you would withdraw. You are still a freshman applicant if you don’t take any college classes
