Could I apply for Financial Aid at MIT after getting admitted there or is it so that I would get aid only if I submit my application now ?

I’m pretty sure you can apply for financial aid after admission.

No, admission decisions for RA is in mid March but all financial aid forms for MIT are due no later than February 15. Do not wait to apply for financial aid!.

I believe you can apply later, but you don’t have a guarantee of getting aid. It’s risky.

Why would you want to wait?

Mollie, Please Help.

You can call the financial aid office at MIT to get a better answer. But I suspect that Piper is right. If there are still available funds it may not be too late, but it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to wait past the deadline.

At least in my experience, there’s no problem applying for aid late – unless they have changed the rules in the past few years, applying late does not run the risk of being awarded less aid.

The only issue that I am aware of with applying for aid late as an incoming freshman is that the financial aid office does not guarantee that they’ll be able to prepare an aid package prior to the May 1 decision deadline unless forms are turned in on time.

Mollie is, as with most things, completely correct. The key advantage of applying now is that you can compare apples with apples. You will be able to compare all schools that have admitted you with an understanding of the (often differing) aid packages. So you will choose between going to school A with aid award 1 versus school B with aid award 2. Otherwise, it is hard to fairly compare the implications of going to A versus B.

Keep in mind that MIT admissions is need blind, so if you are concerned that a financial aid app will affect your chances of admissions, you can rest assured that it will not.
