Can I Apply To British Universities As A Junior And Attend University The Fall Of 2022? (American)

Hey guys, just a quick question. I am a current junior at a private school and I was wondering if it is possible to apply to British schools this year, rather than my senior year. I want to apply to UCL, King’s College London, St. Andrews, and Oxford or Cambridge. I also wish to apply to the William & Mary dual-degree program at St. Andrews. This year, I am taking 5 AP courses, 4 of which are online, and I want to major in classics. Can I put in an application in UCAS for a spot on the fall of 2022? Also, if worse comes to worse and I am rejected, would it hurt my chances when re-applying to any of these schools next year as a senior. Lastly, I was told that none of these colleges look at my transcripts. Is this true? Any help is deeply appreciated.

P.S. If I cannot apply for the fall of 2022 and can only apply for the fall of 2021, could I just apply for a gap year? Also, can someone please send me the info on where to find the information on how American teacher recommendations should be written? Apparently, the teacher recommendations are different in Britain.

AP Classes from this year:

AP Human Geography
AP Modern World History
AP Psychology
AP US History

Why do you want to do this?

Would it mean you never actually formally graduate HS, or would you be graduating early? Or are you planning on finishing HS normally but with a college acceptance in hand?

It’s too late to apply to Oxbridge for admission next year, the deadline is tomorrow.

Go to the Classics page for each university and look under ‘Entry Requirements’. Most of these unis will specify what they want from US students. When APs are not directly stated, you can work out A* = 5, A = 4 and so on from the required A Level grades.

Usually 3 x APs grades will be needed. Not all APs are considered equal, however, and I have a feeling that Human Geog and Psych may be not be counted as full APs, esp for Oxbridge. But you will need to check with each uni and Classics department.

Oxford Uni also says this
“Candidates should normally have Latin and/or Greek to A-level, Advanced Higher, Higher Level in the IB or equivalent.”

Have you studied Latin? It looks like you need AP Latin. Check all the uni websites regarding the Latin/Green requirements.

If you have yet to take the AP tests then your place will be conditional on you achieving the grades the university asks for. If you don’t achieve them, then the place may be revoked - yes this happens.

If you apply during your gap year, you will have the scores in hand

That Oxbridge deadline is only for a select few of majors such as medicine and veterinary science. I want to major in classics or theology and the deadline for that is November 15. I will still graduate high school normally. However, I just want to have extra college acceptances at hand so it is less stressful next year when I apply to American universities.

Which APs does Oxbridge look for from applicants for classics and theology applicants besides AP Latin? I saw on their website applicants do not have to have taken Latin or Greek. However, I am taking Latin 1 this year. What about the other unis I have mentioned? Would it be easier to apply and get in because I am American?

If you meet their requirements then you should get an offer. You offer MAY be slightly lower than for a UK student… but for this level of unis I doubt it. Especially not Oxford or Cambridge.

Kings tells you on their website for Classics (Greek and Latin) BA:-
Required subjects:
Latin or Ancient Greek
Preferred subjects:
Classical Civilisation, Ancient History or History preferred.

Go look up each page. Doing your own research is a key skill needed to do well at a British uni as no one holds your hand

You can apply to only one of Oxford or Cambridge.

I’m on Oxbridge site and one page says application due tomorrow the 15th and the other states that something is due November 10th. What does this mean??? Also, is there a likely chance I get an offer for the William and Mary and St. Andrews joint degree program? Pr is there not as high of a chance?

Oh dear. You do need to get the UCAS application in by 15 October for all courses at Oxford/Cambridge. The 10 November (not sure where you’ve got the 15 Nov from) deadline is just for supplemental written work which is required for many courses.

BTW it is possible to do classics ab initio, you just have an extra year on the course.

Languages, history, EngLit, would all be useful APs for Classics or Theology, if you apply next year.

As you have a number of APs in hand you may get an offer from some of the other universities on your list if you apply this year, and you should be able to defer entry if so.

St Andrews is generally understood to be the easiest for US students to get in.

However, an application next year is almost certainly going to be stronger.

If you still want to apply now, here is the advice for your teacher: https://www.ucas.com/advisers/references/how-write-ucas-undergraduate-references
