You can only apply to ONE school at NYU. If you apply to Tisch, you will only be considered for Tisch. If you apply to Arts and Sciences, you will only be considered for that. You cannot do what you propose, in the case of NYU.

Hi SoozieVT… I am just curious because I know people who double majored at NYU in Tisch Drama and the College of Arts and Sciences. Is is possible to indicate that you would like to double major when you apply to NYU, or do you apply to one college (like Tisch), and then later apply to double major?

You can only apply to one school. If you apply to Tisch, you are considered for Tisch. Once admitted to Tisch, you can double major (though it is difficult). You can’t apply to Tisch and then if you don’t get in, be considered for another school at NYU. If you apply to CAS, you won’t be considered for Tisch. If you enter CAS, you can’t say, "I want to double major with a program at Tisch, " as you must be admitted to Tisch. But if in Tisch, you can elect a minor in CAS or a second major in CAS. I do not believe you can APPLY to two colleges at NYU though. Also, remember, in Arts and Sciences, one doesn’t have to declare a major or apply directly to a major, as it is liberal arts. So, even if in Tisch, and you want to double major in a liberal arts subject, such as Psychology, you can declare that second major later as you don’t apply directly to a liberal arts major as a freshman college applicant. But if you are in Arts and Sciences, you can’t later say you want to double major in film or drama, for example, as you can only major in those by applying directly to them for admission to Tisch.

Also, Tisch students take courses in CAS as they are required to do so but CAS students are only eligible for a small number of courses in Tisch open to non-Tischies.

That makes sense… the students I know who double majored (in psychology, actually :)) definately were in Tisch FIRST and then added a major in CAS… both of them entered with quite a few AP credits. I was just curious if students could declare the intent to double major when they applied, or applied to one school and added the double major later. It sounds as if at NYU the second is true.

I’m sure someone could indicate an interest in double majoring when applying but they still must apply to one school at NYU. A Tisch student would declare a second major in liberal arts at a later point, officially. It is hard to double major but some do (and as you say, some come in with AP credits). A minor is an option that is easier (but not easy) to accomplish. Anyway, you can only be ADMITTED to one school at NYU.

What you can’t do is be admitted to CAS first and want to double major at Tisch.

The other thing you can’t do is what the OP asked about and that is if not admitted to first choice school at NYU, to be considered for another school at NYU. You will only be considered for admission to that one school you apply to.

Apply to Gallatin!
It lets you take classes from ALL NYU schools in NYC! including Tisch!
I know of someone who is taking acting at tisch and psychology/media arts at Steinhardt and a third thing at CAS

Azizi, the Tisch acting classes that Gallatin kids are taking are likely the Open Arts curriculum courses that any non-Tisch NYU kid can take. No one but Tisch drama majors is permitted to take the studio classes.

I really want to major in fine art but I’m also interested in Finance, so if I got into the NYU Institute of Art and later decided that I also want to double major in Finance at Stern, would I be able to do that?
