Can I ask a freshmen teacher who is also my soccer coach a letter of recommendation?

Most colleges that I plan on applying to says that any teacher from any year will work, however they say that they prefer 11th or 12th grade teachers.

I have a better bond with my soccer coach and he knows me better than all of my other teachers even though he has coached me for only 1 year. I had him freshmen year for regular history.

Who should I pick? Does it matter?

Are you a senior? If I was an adcom, here’s what I would think: over the last 1.5 years you haven’t had 2 teachers (eg. 11th and 12 grade) who know you well enough or think highly enough of you to write a strong letter of rec, instead you need to turn to a coach who taught a class you took 4 years ago.

I think that as your soccer coach, he may have some very good insight into your character, work ethic and leadership abilities. Colleges know how well you did academically in classes from your grades-they need the teachers to address you as a person. I think using your teacher/coach is a good idea. Be sure you get a second rec from a Jr. or Sr. teacher.

Short answer: no.
