Can I ask for the waitlist data?

If any of you guys read my previous post, i was waitlisted from my #1 school SUNY Plattsburgh. SUNY Plattsburgh . I do not see the wait list statistics on their site, so my question is do you think if i emailed admissions i could get acess to the data and see what my chances are of getting in?

It is perfectly OK for you to email the admissions office, let them know that they are your #1 choice, ask if there is anything you can do to help get yourself in from the waiting list, and ask about your chances given their experience in previous years.

ok ill get right on that. Thanks a lot for the help!

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I had a brother who had performed poorly in high school. He took a year off, left town and got a job. He returned and took 2 or 3 community college courses, and then applied to Plattsburgh. They were reluctant to take him (I think he was flat out rejected) but his guidance counselor, who knew my family well and my brother’s potential (he had almost gone out of his way to do poorly in high school), told him, “Go up there and tell them your story.”

At the same time, my brother’s guidance counselor called Plattsburgh’s admissions office and told them that my brother did have potential, and that he had matured significantly during his year off. They knew our high school well, which probably sent 5 or 10 to Plattsburgh every year. My brother went up there, pleaded his case, got in, and eventually graduated and went on to earn his master’s degree.

Talk to your guidance counselor, and figure out a strategy to get yourself bumped off the waiting list. Ask admissions if you can meet them face-to-face to talk more about your background.

As the above posters said, the most important thing is to let them know they are your number 1 choice, and you definitely will attend if they accept you. Accept your spot on the waitlist immediately, then contact admissions and talk to someone there (or even better–visit). Follow up with regular emails (not enough to be a nuisance, but enough so that they know you are serious.) Sell yourself and tell them how you can be an active member of their campus community. The waitlist statistics for last year show 46 people accepting a place on the waitlist (out of 120 offered), and 37 of those 46 were offered admission. It’s good to have a backup plan, but I think you do have a good chance of being offered admission, especially if you can get your name near the top of the list.
My nephew was waitlisted at his first choice school, and he kept in regular contact with the school and was offered admission a month or 2 later.
Good luck!!

I could not get into this site for a week or two but thanks a lot ancient tiger! thats a good story, and thanks for the encouragement, and thanks a lot mandarin3 too! i never found the data but looks like you did! i cant thank you enough! Thanks to everyone :)

and mandarin10, do you mind me asking where you got that waitlist data for plattsburgh? i looked all over the site and sadly couldnt find it?

I got the waitlist stats off the College Board Website (BigFuture) for Plattsburgh. If you do a google search for “college board plattsburgh” it will be your first choice. Then go to “Applying” on the top left side and that page has the admission and waitlist stats near the top. Under the stats in light gray type it says they are the stats from Fall 2012.
Good Luck!

okay ! thanks a lot
