Can I do this?

I applied ED I for NYU Stern, but i wasn't accepted, instead, in the end i was admitted to another school within NYU as an alternative school choice. Since NYU didn't offer the admission to the school i selected, therefore this admission is non-binding. But i still have to respond to this offer by Jan 15th.

I want to go to NYU, but i also want to try other higher-ranked schools for RD at the same time. So...can i accept the current NYU offer and pay the deposit first and reserve a place in NYU, and then i also apply for better schools in RD. If any school in the top 20 i applied admit me in April, then i just give up NYU and go to the better-ranked school. So...in the process, NYU can be my security school, and if i am lucky enough to be admitted to a better school, i only waste the deposit i paid to NYU.

I just want to know if this is possible, and is it ethically correct to do this? Will i receive any punishment from NYU if they discover that i have accepted their offer but eventually go to another school?

It's really urgent for me to know this right now because i have to decide if i am still applying for other schools very soon. Thanks in advance!

If NYU admitted you only to LSP, it’s a good sign a top 20 school is unlikely. But since you’re not bound by ED, don’t you have until may to make your choice?

bump but think its’ possible

Most colleges plan on losing some freshmen over the summer due to waitlists at other schools. This is really no different. I don’t see a problem.

Our Guide when we visited NYU was a Stern Student, and base on him. NYU Stern discurage other NYU schools to transfer into Stern. As he said, NYU requires higher GPA for their own student to enter Stern than those from other schools, in addition, they have a limit number allowed for internal Stern transfers. Basically, they discurange those students in OP’s situation to think they can make the switch onset.

OTOH, you are perfectly alright to accept Non-Stern colleges now and later decline it. They expect that.

Is there some reason why you have to pay your deposit before the April/may deadline?
