I want to double major in psychology(or anthropology) and commerce. I know it's gonna be really hard, but is it doable to double major across schools? Has anyone done it before?

Yes, that’s allowed. Doubling between Comm and A&S (as you want to do) is definitely doable, just make sure you plan ahead and talk to your advisor about it.

Yes you can. That’s what I’m doing. Many people actually do a double major between comm and the college. But plan ahead and try to get a lot of your psyc or anthro classes done in your 1st and 2nd year. 3rd year in the comm school will be killer, and you won’t have much room to take classes outside of comm classes. 4th year will be better, and you’ll have room to finish up your 2nd major then.

Hey so I was planning on doing the same thing… But I was wondering if it would be more advisable to pursue a minor in psych insteadof a double major with he comm school?? Oh and also how are you liking the psych and comm programs at UVA so far??

Thanks so much guys!! Another question: how heavy is the workload?

I have multiple friends doing Comm & Psych, Engineering & Econ or Comm & French.

Does anyone know if you can do a double major between Commerce and Biology? (or another science field). With extra lab requirements, I’m wondering if its possible to that and still graduate in four years.

Yes, but it’s extremely tough for ALL of your four years. I don’t know anyone who is majoring in comm and a science field. It’s more common for someone to double-major in comm and math/econ/foreign language.

Does anyone know if I can double major in theater and business at UVa?

If you do a minor instead of a second major, the scheduling will be easier and you will have a much easier time graduating in 4 years. You also will have more freedom to choose classes. The comm school preregs and requirements already limit your electives.

I understand many people who successfully double major have a ton of AP credit before they start at UVa.

What would you say is a realistic amount of AP credits to have going into UVA in order to reasonably double up?

To double major, I think the key is having AP credits in a variety of areas that correspond to the distribution requirements. Overall do not think it is too difficult to do (in terms of scheduling), especially in related fields like physics and math.

Double majoring in the same school is very doable. Double majoring across schools means that you are sacrificing your social life for a major. You should consider minoring if the two degrees you want are not in the same school, unless you are really willing to give up some of your social life and college experience for a second major which will never actually help your career.

Hazelorb is right. I contacted several people at UVA about double majoring across engineering and Arts and Sciences, and the general consensus was not very appealing. Even with a lot of AP/DE credit, I would have had to complete summer sessions as well as work during breaks, not to mention I would still be pulling near or over 20 credits all eight semesters. Though I don’t know much about the commerce school, I imagine it isn’t that much easier. Being an Echols Scholar will help, but it will still be frustrating. AP credit really becomes worthless if you are an Echols Scholar though, as you don’t have to fulfill any of those area requirements anyway. You might have one or two exams that apply to courses you need. Being persistently active in the school, interning, etc., will look better than having two majors anyway.
