Double Major Viability

Hello,

I have been wondering if any students or alumni could help me with a question regarding a double major in COMM and CLAS. Potentially, I would want to major in commerce (with concentrations in marketing and finance) and a humanity, most likely English, history, or philosophy. Would having two concentrations within McIntire completely nullify any chance of double majoring? Even if I stuck to one concentration, how feasible would it be to double major while keeping a high GPA? I’m willing to do the requisite work to “make it happen,” but it would be helpful if anyone who has experience with a cross-school major, or knows someone who does, could weigh in.

Thanks.

In general, most people who do double majors have tons of AP credit. Other people will have to comment about the limited flexibility of the Comm School schedule. The problem is that many majors will require you to take a number of classes or assignments during the 4th year, when the Comm schedule may not provide you with sufficient time to do it.

I believe you could probably do a minor in some subjects, such as history. You could probably meet a number of the requirements for a history minor in the first 2 years. Based upon my son’s experience, I believe it is not hard for 1st years to get into many history classes.

Thank you for your input. The minor option seems worthwhile, and I’ll definitely look into it further.

If you really enjoy history or a similar subject, and take a number of classes in that subject in the first couple years, you will probably build up a nice GPA that will help you get into Comm School. Also, another advantage of history is that the classes typically do not have many prerequisites. A first year old could jump into 3000 level classes if you have the background and aptitude. There are a number of other majors that have many prerequisites, which make it hard to take higher level classes in your first two years.

When I looked at student ratings a few years ago, UVa’s history professors rated very high.

@jacob117 my S is a 3rd year in the Comm School. He went in with many AP credits (nearly 40). He is doing a double major in Statistics. He made this decision during his 1st year in addition to planning on applying to Comm. He did plan out his course track pretty carefully to make sure that he would be able to do both (assuming that he got into Comm). He completed many of the course requirements for the Stats major during his first 2 years, along with the Comm pre-requisites. He also has had time to take other classes that interest him. He has always had 5 classes each semester. Now that he is in Comm he will be doing 2 Concentrations (Finance and Marketing) and one Track. It can be done but you need to plan well…and I think have come in with many AP ir IB credits. Good luck!
