So I’m a freshman at a 4 year university, and I was thinking about transferring mid-year to a state school that would be a LOT cheaper ($30k+ less per year plus more reasons I’m not here to discuss). I was already admitted to the state school for the fall and had said that I planned to enroll (which I was told to do by my hs counselor for scholarships). Is it possible to just add classes to my schedule for the next semester, and just start going there (assuming I get my financial aid info sorted out), or would I have to send in another application for the spring semester? It’s not hard to get into (80%ish acceptance rate, and I had a 1360 SAT score with a 4.1 W gpa in high school so I’m almost sure I’d still be admitted without a college semester finished).
Also, once I finish my semester at my current school, can I give my new school my transcripts so that they can apply any transfer credits, or in general, should I wait to apply until after I have my 1st semester transcripts? Thanks.
If you didn’t pay a deposit and are not attending the school they would take you off their active student roster. You can’t just sign up for spring semester classes. You will need to reapply as a transfer student. Contact admissions at the school you want to attend and ask if you can apply for the spring semester. FWIW it was in bad form to tell that school you would be attending and then simply not pay and not show up.
You’re right. I was sent an email directly from the school saying “Our records indicate that you recently applied to XXXXXX but did not enroll. We hope you choose to enroll in the near future!”. I interpreted this in that I would be able to defer my enrollment to the spring semester without sending in a new application. I should have phrased better. That being said, I’m still not sure how to interpret that email, any help is appreciated.
Do not know the university or its applicable rules, but you should definitely not assume the email you received means you can just wait until second semester to enroll.
Don’t assume you’ll be eligible for scholarships there either. Transfers don’t generally get the same aid as first time freshmen. Contact the school and talk to them.
