I'm not a science major but I wanted to enroll in some upper division MCB classes. Is this possible? I haven't completed many of the lower division MCB classes yet...

btw, I want to sign up for MCB 64 (my CalSO is on July 8th) but it says the course doesn’t exist on the L&S New Student Orientation site. MCB 64 is listed on the catalog though, so I’m confused…

I have no clue to answer the technical question, although I’ve heard that some people have been able to bypass the upper division requirements simply because the professors/etc. don’t always check. However, this begs the question in the first place: why do you want to enroll in some upper division MCB classes? Prereqs are there for a reason. Would you be able to succeed even if you got to go in without completing the prereqs?

does it exist on the schedule of classes?

You can’t take MCB UDs unless you have Chem 1A & 3A-B, Bio 1A/L, and MCB 102

^^Really? For some of the classes (like MCB 64) it says I only need high school chem and bio…

Also, aren’t I supposed to complete 6 upper division courses outside my major before I graduate? Shouldn’t I be able to enroll in some upper-division MCB classes then?

MCB 64 isn’t upper division, it is lower division. Upper divisions are numbered 100/+

You have to take 6 UD **units/B outside of your major department.

MCB 64 is not given this fall.

The catalog lists all the approved classes at Cal, but in any particular semester only a portion are available. Some departments list the schedule for when a class will be given - sometimes it is only one semester every two years. Other departments do not list this, which makes long term planning more difficult. I do not see any such schedule for MCB, but an advisor for the department may have access to the current schedule. Here is an example from the IB department [Undergraduate Courses](http://ib.berkeley.edu/student/courses/lists/new_undergrad.php)

So, how do I enroll in upper division courses in another major (to complete my 6 unit requirement)? Do I have to take pre-reqs for another major first?

Generally, you do this when you are a junior or senior.

You might pick an UD class to satisfy one of your remaining breadth requirements, or as an AC class.

Even DeCal courses can come with alternate class numbers - 98 and 198, where upperclassmen are supposed to use the UD number when registering. That gives you UD out of major credit (assuming that they hosting department for the DeCal is not your major department).

For example, someone who took the James Bond Decal - [DeCal : James Bond: Politics, Pop Culture, Hero](<a href=“My Dating Tests – What I learned to avoid”>My Dating Tests – What I learned to avoid) - would have it appear as a pass/fail course on their transcript, taken as Geo 98 if they were a freshman or soph, and as Geo 198 if they were a junior or senior. That gives that person 2 upper division units out of major assuming that Geography is not their major.

Often some of the units are easy, because they may be choices that also count for the major or are commonly taken. Examples: IB majors have some genetics courses from MCB that are options for their major, thus giving them a few UD out of major units. Pre-med students usually take MCB 102 as the last of their ochem courses for medical school admission. IB majors also have a list of approved UD electives that count towards their major degree and are also out of the major department - [Pre-Approved Electives | IB](http://ib.berkeley.edu/student/courses/lists/elective.php)
